Quaker burial ground in Barbados holds open day
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Those who might be in Barbados on November 10th, 2007 are invited to the opening of the restored burial ground used by Quakers from 1671 to the19th century. Quakers flourished in Barbados through visits by Ann Austin, Mary Fisher, George Fox and others, and through exiles from England. There are no active meetings on the island now, but a committee of local residents started restoration in 2003 as the site had begun to erode and fill with household garbage. The burial ground is close to St. Philip's Church across Highway 4B in Church Village. Contact Maris Corbin, committee secretary/treasurer at corbin@caribnet.net or tel: (246) 432-9667 for more information.
Friends Center green building renovation
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ FWCC's Section of the Americas main office is located at Friends Center, in Center City Philadelphia, which is undergoing a "green" renovation. The landmark project will not only protect the earth, it will also lower long term operating costs and preserve Friends Center for another generation. Friends Center's Turning Quaker Gray to Quaker Green campaign has attracted people as diverse as policy makers, high-rise developers, church members, and furniture retailer IKEA managers who have come to celebrate and learn. Local media report this project as "a beacon of hope" and as "a distinct ecological witness to the Religious Society of Friends and beyond."
The two larger buildings on the campus will be fossil-fuel free and nearly water neutral. Leading-edge practices selected for implementation include wind power (purchased since 1998), solar panels and a vegetative roof (installed in June 2007), geothermal heating and cooling (drilling scheduled for November 2007), water storage and conservation and energy efficiency measures to reduce consumption. For more information or to learn about how you can help, see www.friendscentercorp.org or contact Pat McBee at 215-563-8832 or pmcbee@friendscentercorp.org. |
