(Story told to me by Jerry Deal of Forks of
Cheat Distillery)
The story goes...that the moonshiner would
each evening put a jar whiskey in the grave stone
and in the morning find the money. (Note the
door on the stone). And, Morgantown,
WV., is the beginning of the whiskey
trail that ran to Pittsburg, PA>

Raking the Malt |

Sperryville, Va.
Rick Wasmund of Copper Fox Distillery rakes
his floor malting. This is the only
distillery in North America that malts barley
grains to make whiskey. Wasmund's Single
Malt Whiskey is often sold before it is
distilled.

The above is model of a moonshine still
from North Carolina. I have two
questions about making moonshine. If you
apply heat directly to a
mixture of corn and water
don't you produce...glue? I do know you
need enzymes to convert corn
starches to sugars. Sugar water that then can
be fermented. And then distilled.
I think moonshiners must
have added sugar to the mash. This way the
mash that would
ferment. Finally, where did the
moonshiners get a
yeast strain to ferment a corn and sugar
mash? Isn't is recipe for

Pot Still
The Jacob Carl pot still includes a pot and
burner, and a four plate distillation column

Very feature rich. It has a custom designed

Surety Bonds, 190 proof |
 |
Hi Bill, As we discussed, one of the
hurdles for starting a distillery seems to be
getting the surety bond necessary to submit
the license application to the TTB. We have
established a national program to clear this
hurdle. We have set up a three tiered program
so we can bond the new start up distillery,
the under three years in biz distillery, and
the established distillery. Normally to get
ultra preferred pricing, a distillery would
need to have three years in business, good
credit, and some assets. Our program allows
us to write the new start up distillery with
no experience or history, and usually minimal
assets and then progress them to more
preferred pricing as they establish their
business and grow. The bond would be with the
same surety so the transitions would be
seamless. We would be happy to send the
application to any of your members, both new
and established, and assist them with placing
their operating bonds. Feel free to call me
with any questions.
