  • Death by Risk Taking

I've noticed that many valuable ideas get killed because employees say, "we can't afford to take risks at our company." That makes perfectly good sense on the surface. It is also an over used excuse to maintain the status quo. We know this eventually leads to a downward spiral. Many companies never recover. It's risky not to take risks!

Let's shift our thinking about the term "risk taking." Try using, "responsible risk taking" and see what happens. This seems to be a responsible risk. We can live with these reasonable risks.

Futurist Forecasts Generation Y will Migrate Heavily Overseas

Generation Y will migrate heavily overseas. For the first time in its history, the United States will see a significant proportion of its population emigrate due to overseas opportunities. According to futurists Arnold Brown and Edie Weiner, Generation Y, the population segment born between 1978 and 1995, may be the first U.S. generation to have many of its members leave the country to pursue large portions of their lives, if not their entire adult lives, overseas.

This is a great example of an opportunity for creative thinking. We need to be doing some thinking ahead in order to be ready to leverage trends as they occur. Suppose highly educated generation Y citizens decide to emigrate to other countries for satisfying work and life experiences. What opportunities does this create for your company? What are you going to do to realize those opportunities?

    The Innovation Instinct
    Lynda Curtin Photo

Innovation is a people process. I coined the term, Innovation Instinct, to create a simple way for people to talk about innovation as a key competency. There isn't a successful business today that isn't searching for employees with a highly developed Innovation Instinct. Most companies are focusing intensely on developing this key skill set.

Everyone knows people with the Innovation Instinct, people who recognize valuable ideas and work with them to ensure they are implemented. They know their own strengths with the process and draw on the strengths of others when needed.

Imagine how much easier it would be to drive innovation if we adopted the term, "Innovation Instinct." Our Innovation Instinct was weak on that product launch. We need to tap our Innovation Instinct right now. Howard's Innovation Instinct has really developed into a finely oiled machine.
