  • Teens are Driving Great Design

Yesterday I noticed receiving my second copy of PB (Pottery Barn) Teen Catalogue. 112 pages filled with bedroom decorating ideas and products for teens. Design. Color. Texture. Organization. Fashion. I think we are seeing the emergence of a younger generation growing up with the expectation of great design, use of color, texture, materials and patterns - at all price points, in all products and services. All design - All the time! Today's customers expect great design. Are you giving enough attention to design elements? How do you know? I can't think of a product or service that can't apply the concept of great design. Can you?

    Key Question: What Becomes Obsolete?

My father died five years ago at age 83. I was never able to get him to want to use a computer. It wasn't because he didn't have an open mind to new things or a key curiosity. He did. I just wasn't able to demonstrate for him or answer his question: If I get a computer what will I give up; what will I no longer have time for? In other words - what becomes obsolete? A very insightful question. Think about this question and how it may help you advance and gain acceptance for your ideas and innovations. My dad would be glad to know he helped you out.

If your schedule permits this is an event that will challenge your thinking about your business; provide you with ideas to build on; ensure 2007 is a banner year.

    Why Define Innovation?

Robert Tucker defines innovation as - Bringing new ideas to life. Harold Evans defines innovation as: Inventiveness put to use. I define innovation as: Implementing ideas that customers and users value enough to actively support." There are many more definitions of innovation. I believe one of the reasons organizations have such a challenge being innovative is because there isn't a shared operational definition of innovation. A common definition can help team members work in alignment. This saves time and reduces employee grief. At your next meeting ask each person to write down what they think the definition of innovation is. Then compare all the definitions. You will have started work on crafting a definition that can be supported.
