Entertainment-This Weekend
Family-Sized Culture on a Recession-Sized Budget this Saturday

See A Wonderful Play, Get Free Books, Do Some Shopping, Have A Warm Lunch, all in keeping with your pocketbook.
Toronto, Ontario - Saturday, May 9th - Having a great time with the family doesn't always have to cost a lot of money.  After all, quality time is considered to be time spent with loved ones doing things together that you enjoy. Sometimes that can mean just hanging out in the kitchen, hiking together or tossing a ball back and forth.  But every once in awhile, it's nice to enjoy what the city has to offer, like seeing a play, going shopping or eating out.  But once you add in parking, these activities can usually cost a LOT of money. Kid-Safe Productions is here to say: "Not This Weekend!"  Tricia Myles, Artistic Director of Kid-Safe Productions and staunch lover of a good bargain, spent an afternoon wandering around the neighbourhood of the Palmerston Library Theatre and came up with some very inexpensive and even some free activities to do together in the Bathurst/Bloor area that can fit easily into a tight budget!

See A Play ($5.00):
This Saturday, May 9, 2009 Kid-Safe Productions is putting on their very popular musical play "How Amazing We Can Be" at the Palmerston Library Theatre, 560 Palmerston Avenue.  Showtimes: 11:00 am and 1:00 pm Travel back in time to a land of dragons and castles, town criers, and yes, even singing frogs, and experience Kid-Safe's newest madcap, medieval musical together with your family.  Now is your chance to see it at an affordable rate.  Cost of admission is only $5.00 per person at the door, though it is recommended you call first to make a reservation. Tickets can be reserved by calling 416.568.2466 or 416.809.5437. Kid-Safe is partnering with Kids Help Phone for this performance and will be donating some of the proceeds of the day back to Kids Help Phone.

Get Free Books ($0.00):
After the play, your children will receive a free "How Amazing We Can Be" colouring booklet, to keep as a memento of the show.  And we shouldn't forget the library! A vast resource of "free" books. Cost? Only your promise to return them after you've read them.  "Now where else in the world can you get free books to take home and read together with your kids but at the Public Library?" says Myles. "There isn't anything better than physically going into a library environment with it's quiet/busy atmosphere and nostalgic smell of books. It's just the best place to learn and read together with your kids."  The Theatre for the play is right inside the Palmerston Library building so stop in at the library, either before or after the show to experience the world of books with your kids. While there, be sure to check out the library's message board for other upcoming free to low-cost events.

Have A Warm Lunch (< $10.00):
Stop in for a warm atmosphere and delicious lunch at the Better & Better Bakery & Cafe just a half a block's walk from the Library Theatre - at 586 Bloor Street.  You can get a bowl of soup for only $3.25 and sandwiches are all well under $5.00.  The Better & Better Bakery & Cafe will also be at the "How Amazing We Can Be" performance providing free samples of their baked goods and cookies.  They will also be offering other items for sale at reasonable prices.

Bargain Shopping ($you decide.00):
Why not check out Honest Ed's? They always have plenty of bargains for things you need or even things you didn't know you needed! No need to give you directions how to get there, just follow the lights!

Free Parking ($0.00):
Last but not least, the great thing about this area of town is that, there is always plenty of free parking if you are willing to walk a bit.  There is also a Green P parking lot right across from the library too.

"The way I picture it", says Myles, "take your kids downtown on the subway, get off at Bathurst station at around 11:30, walk west just a tiny bit on the north side of Bloor St., stop in the Better & Better Bakery & Cafe for a warm lunch, meander over to the library theatre at about 12:30 for the 1:00 pm start time of "How Amazing We Can Be" pick up your tickets and then go back up to the library to browse books together until it's time to head into the theatre and enjoy our show. After the show, take your free colouring book, head over to Honest Ed's and window shop or wander through the aisles picking up bargains together."

Now THAT'S a quality day (and hardly any money) well spent. See you there!
