New nursing professional practice model debuts

 nursing practice model

Nurses, did you know Saint Luke's Hospital has had a nursing professional practice model for years?

The need to update and create a professional practice model that nurses can identify with was a revelation during our Magnet site visit in 2010. During the past 12 months, a team of 15 nurses representing every practice area in the hospital has been working diligently to create a new professional practice model.

A professional practice model is a schematic or picture which provides a visual tool to communicate to nurses and others what is important, expected, and required in the delivery of nursing care at SLH. It illustrates how we practice, collaborate, communicate, and develop professionally.

So what can a professional practice model do for nursing at SLH?

  • It guides our practice and delivery of care at the bedside
  • We use it to guide our shared governance processes and refer to it when developing our guidelines
  • Our professional practice model clarifies the expectations of nurses at SLH, which are to demonstrate autonomy, accountability, authority, and advocacy within our practice
  • The ultimate goal results in providing patient-centered care and creating a culture of excellence for our patients and peers at SLH

Thank you to the nurses of the professional model task force for all your hard work and commitment: Michelle Atchity, Kris Browns, Jaime Galaz-Johnson, Mary Prokop, Sarah Puckett, Jason Purcell, Clay Salmon, Sarah Schubkegel, Kristin Sollars, Mary Stahl, Kristen Tinsman, Diane Trimble, Kevin Turner, Debbie White, and Jennifer Wood.

Look for education and the model posted on your unit from your Magnet Champion. Questions or comments? Please contact Sarah Schubkegel or Jason Purcell by email.

Choose green

The Nutrition Services team is proud to have melamine dishware and silverware in the Broadway Dining area. This feature is saving the hospital each year.

We need your help to continue the savings. Please return any trays, cups, and silverware back to the dining area on your next visit.

Another way to help us save is to only use "to go" products when you are not dining in with us. Our team is trained in this area, but don't be afraid to correct us if we reach for a "to go" item and it is not needed.

Let's all make an effort to choose green. We look forward to serving you!

  Honduras medical mission trip

Saint Luke's Health System R.N.s, N.A.s, radiology techs, and residents have an amazing opportunity to travel to La Ceiba, Honduras, in October 2012 to help start the only public ICU in the region, which will serve approximately 1 million people.

There will be two different weeks when we will be sending employees. The first is Oct. 10 - 17 and the second is Oct. 15 - 23. The cost of the trip is approximately $1,400 plus spending money for souvenirs, etc. The Saint Luke's Foundation will help fund this exciting project (up to $1,000 per person) with the submission of an individual application.

Please let Kelsey Fechter know ASAP by emailing her atkfechter@saint-lukes.org  if you are interested in going or have any questions, as we need to finalize our plans within the next month. Don't miss out on this great opportunity!
