Saint Luke's Hospital eRounds

Cara McDaniel, information associate, Saint Luke's Neuroscience

Cara McDaniel
Cara McDaniel

Institute, is the May Employee of the Month.

Her nomination read in part, "Cara exemplifies all of the core values desired for Saint Luke's employees. She always has a smile on her face for everyone who walks onto the unit and politely greets people and offers assistance to those who come to her desk. She was a true leader when iOrder started, and she teaches everyone how to use it."

Another nomination read, "She is constantly smiling and buzzing around to help everyone. One patient's husband commented that Cara was the first person he saw when he walked onto the unit and she was smiling. When he left at the end of the day, she was still smiling. She stayed to help us when we opened the extra beds on SE1 and set up the unit with all the supplies she could get together to make our lives easier."

Congratulations on this well-deserved honor!

Projects by residents, fellows, PharmD residents, and nurse researchers competed for monetary awards and were evaluated by distinguished judging teams comprised of medical staff, PharmD staff, and nurse leaders. Additionally, many of these Saint Luke's research projects compete nationally and receive national awards within their specialties providing national recognition for Saint Luke's.

National Neuroscience Nursing Week

May 13-19

To our neuroscience nurses:

This is a week when we recognize neuroscience nurses and the major contribution they make to the success of Saint Luke's Neuroscience Institute and the excellent care and outcomes for our patients.

Dedicating a career to neuroscience is a wonderful but daunting challenge. You have taken on learning about the most complex organ of the body and some of the most demanding and complicated clinical problems that exist in medicine. You participate in dramatic outcomes when a stroke is reversed, and you care for patients with devastating disabilities with equal dedication.

The care you deliver is based in evidence and delivered with compassion. Those of us who are privileged to work with you understand that our excellent regional and national reputation is due, in large part, to the contribution each of you makes every day with every patient.

Weight loss is contagious! Catch it with Weight Watchers at Work!

Last chance to get an At-Work Meeting started - Join by May 31

We've known for several years that unhealthy behaviors are contagious and spread within social networks. But it turns out that healthy behaviors are contagious, too! When someone exercises or loses weight, people around them are more likely to do so as well. This may seem intuitive, but groundbreaking new research is showing us just how powerful teams, groups, and social interaction can be.

Weight Watchers at Work is a convenient way to meet with co-workers, get great info about the best methods for losing weight, and celebrate the group's weight loss efforts. If you are ready to "catch" this epidemic of weight loss and improved health, register now for the Weight Watchers at Work program.

Classes won't start until we have 15 registered participants. If you register now, you can attend meetings in your community while waiting for on-site classes to begin. You will have access to online eTools, which allows you to track your weight and food intake. You also have access to recipes, points values for many different foods, and a social connection to other Weight Watchers Members!

To register for the at work program, please use the following Saint Luke's portal information:

Student Perfusionist

of the Year

Carrie Kovaleski
Carrie Kovaleski

At the end of the academic year, the Perfusion Department at Saint Luke's Hospital selects their Student Perfusionist of the Year, who they believe represents the perfusion profession in the most positive light. This year, Carrie Kovaleski won the award along with a $500 educational scholarship. Her high standards of care, willingness to learn, and exceptional attitude made Kovaleski a unanimous selection of the perfusion department for 2011-2012. Saint Luke's Hospital has been a clinical affiliate for the University of Nebraska Perfusion program for the last 14 years. Students are sent to Saint Luke's for an eight-week rotation to learn how to operate the heart-lung bypass machine in open heart surgery.

eRounds is published each Wednesday. Please submit any information for publication to slhrounds@saint-lukes.org by noon on Monday.
