Hospice House groundbreaking

On March 30, Saint Luke's leaders and dignitaries broke ground on a new Saint Luke's Hospice House that will open in summer 2013. Guest speakers included U.S. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver II (Missouri, 5th District) and Kansas City Mayor Sly James. A fundraising campaign for Saint Luke's Hospice House raised $3.5 million in charitable donations for the project. Nestled among trees and green space on two acres, the facility completes the Saint Luke's Hospice continuum of care. It will provide a comfortable, family-oriented setting for patients who can no longer be cared for at home, as well as support for families so they can make the most of each day with their loved ones. The site is located on the west side of Southwest Trafficway between 35th and 36th Streets in Kansas City, Mo.

National Medical Transcriptionist Week

May 20-26

Medical transcriptionists work together with clinicians for patient safety. In 1999 the Institute of Medicine published its well-known study of preventable medical errors and the human cost of those errors, "To Err is Human: Building a Safer Health System." Concern for patient safety did not begin in 1999, but that report underlined in dramatic fashion the need for increased attention to the issue.

Serving as a second set of eyes on patient health records, health care documentation specialists (medical transcriptionists) are workers trained to look for and identify potential errors in the medical record. No matter where errors originated, health care documentation specialists, like everyone else involved in patient care, are passionately committed to eliminating preventable threats to patient safety.

Ensuring patient safety is not a one-dimensional task that rests solely upon one individual health care provider. Clinicians and health care documentation specialists must forge a partnership, working together for patient safety. Source: www.ahdionline.org

Nurses earn C.N.R.N. credentialing

This spring, seven nurses from Saint Luke's Neuroscience Institute (SLNSI) have earned Certified Neuroscience Registered Nurse (C.N.R.N.) certification through the American Board of Neuroscience Nursing.

Congratulations to the following SLNSI nurses: Yong Kang, East 1; Adrienne Patterson, East 1; Amanda Canida, East 1; Joan Pool, MICU; Lyndea Rose, MICU; Marc Loner, CC Float; Brenda Jones, Neurology NP.

SLNSI was recently national recognized from the American Board of Nursing Specialties ABNS for itsoutstanding work toward nursing certification. Neuroscience nursing practice includes clinical practice, consultation, research, administration, or education in the neuroscience field. Certification is an important credential that attests to the achievement of specialty knowledge beyond basic nursing preparation. It is evidence of clinical expertise and leadership in neuroscience nursing practice. C.N.R.N. status is granted for five years and is renewed through validation of continuing education or re-examination. There are currently 30 nurses who have earned the C.N.R.N. designation.

eRounds is published each Wednesday. Please submit any information for publication to slhrounds@saint-lukes.org by noon on Monday.
