Saint Luke's Hospital eRounds

Daisy Award Winner

Fitzmaurice was nominated for the award by a patient she cared for. In the nomination the patient stated, "From the moment I met Sarah I knew I had met a very special person. I look forward to coming to the hospital and seeing all my nurses, but when Sarah is working I get extra excited. In my opinion we have been through a lot together. She has helped me through a lot of hard times in less than ideal situations, but has also always been there for me with a big smile and her warm comforting personality.

Sarah is one of the many reasons I feel safe and comfortable whenever I have to come to the hospital. When I see her on the floor I get a calming feeling because I know everything is going to be alright. She has gone above and beyond her regular duties on several occasions to make me and my family comfortable. I can honestly say I don't know if I would have had as good of an experience without her on the floor. Sarah is only one of the very special people that have made me cherish my time at Saint Luke's."

Fitzmaurice graduated from Saint Luke's College of Nursing in 2006, and she has worked on Main 5 since. She is currently in school to become an adult/gerontological nurse practitioner and hopes to continue to work at SLH after graduation. Sarah loves working at this diverse hospital, and enjoys meeting the different people who have helped mold her into the person that she is today.

Employee of the Year

Sharon WoodSharon Wood, administrative assistant in Outpatient Rehab, was named the 2011 Employee of the Year at the annual employee banquet. Wood has been with Saint Luke's since 2006. She plays an integral role as the first contact of the outpatient clinic, and she is involved with patient scheduling and supporting the therapists. She is a trainer, a mentor, a problem-solver, and a process-thinker. Her high standards help make our therapists as successful and efficient as possible. Wood partners on a department email outlining a "Prayer List for Joys and Concerns," and the influence of her personal standards are noticed and appreciated. Wood has two adult children with families of their own, and she is very involved in their lives.

Stay tuned for overall satisfaction results.

The Engagement Team would like to wish all hospital staff a happy Hospital Week, May 7-11, as well as give recognition to all nurses for National Nurses Week. We appreciate everyone's hard work in making this the best place to work! A small token of appreciation will be distributed next week.

Milk Bank open house

Human milk dramatically boosts the chances for sick and fragile newborns to thrive. In June 2010 Saint Luke's Hospital opened a collection depot for nursing mothers to donate their excess breast milk.

Saint Luke's is building on its success as a milk depot by becoming a milk bank where donations are not only collected, but now are also screened, processed, and pasteurized to become available for the specific needs of those who need it the most... our tiniest, most vulnerable newborns. The center expects to begin pasteurizing and dispensing milk in May.

Metabolic testing

Metabolic testing is a simple 15-minute breath test in which the air you exhale is analyzed to determine exactly how much oxygen your body consumes at rest.

Once completed, your metabolic rate will be used to calculate your target caloric zones. Your zones will let you know how to eat the maximum amount of food and still lose weight. For accurate results, no food, stimulants (such as caffeine), or exercise at least eight hours before the test.

Fitness update

Fitness is fun!

Fitting in regular activity is important, however, excuses abound that keep us from exercising regularly. For example, during the day, there's no time when other obligations don't take priority. Or it's too cold or too hot. Or perhaps we're just too tired to exercise. These feelings are normal, but buying in to them time and time again will put us in a rut and keep us from getting the activity our bodies need. This month, the Your Health Matters: never settle program wants to help you put the fun back into your activity program so you can overcome the excuses that swirl in your head. Here's how:

  1. Fight fatigue with good food. Learn more in this handout on Fueling your Exercise.
  2. Sign up for Aetna Get Active and participate in weekly BONUS Challenges designed to motivate individual participants in various fun activities that include healthy eating, regular activity, and stress management.
  3. Participate in an upcoming web conference on "Fitness Trends: What's Hot, What's Not, What's for You." This web conference will help you find the right fitness routine to make fitness fun again.

For additional tips, go to the Your Health Matters - never settle web page or contact Gayle O'Connell at ext. 23807 or Chris Stephens at ext. 36793.

Fitness trends: What's hot, what's not, and what's right for you!

With so many workouts advertising amazing results, how do you know if a workout will really help you reach your fitness goals or do more harm than good? Join Bethanie Schemel, health promotion specialist, in a web conference as she talks about the hottest fitness trends and helps you determine what kind of workout is best for you.

This online session can be viewed from the convenience of your computer. You can choose from two sessions: Thursday, May 24, or Tuesday, May 29, from noon - 12:30 p.m. To register for either of these sessions, email Yourhealthmatters@saint-lukes.org or call Gayle O'Connell at ext. 23807 and a meeting invitation will be sent to your calendar.

eRounds is published each Wednesday. Please submit any information for publication to slhrounds@saint-lukes.org by noon on Monday.
