Volunteer for Hospital Hill Run

Hospital Hill Run is the grandfather of all the runs in Kansas City. It is the oldest run/walk and one of the most challenging. Athletes from all fitness levels come out to test their skills. Volunteers are the core and strength of the event.

Saint Luke's Hospital supports an aid station for this event, located right outside the hospital's doors on Broadway. If you would like to volunteer, please call Marianne Goulding at ext. 23799 or email her at mgoulding@saint-lukes.org. Hospital Hill Run needs approximately 1,500 volunteers. If you would like to volunteer in other ways, please visit the Hospital Hill Run website at www.hospitalhillrun.com, click on "volunteer," and sign up. If you have questions, please email Karlie at Karlie@hospitalhillrun.com. You will receive a T-shirt or cap and a ticket for the BBQ afterwards. Come join the fun!

Taking steps toward healthier finances

In the book Well Being by Tom Rath, Gallup surveys found that how we manage the money we have is one of five key elements that affect our health, happiness, and sense of security. This can obviously be more challenging in the present economy.

During the 2012 Annual Benefits Enrollment period last fall, we asked employees what they would like to see in education around financial wellness, which is the fourth balance point of the SLHS Employee Wellness Program. We received many suggestions from employees that started with the basics of balancing a checking account, learning more about the SLHS retirement plans, and offering the Dave Ramsey Financial University program to help employees and their families learn skills to get out of debt.

We listened to your suggestions and started with targeted retirement communications to SLHS employees who were participants in the prior SLHS Cash Balance Pension Plan. We have added another representative to the on-site Diversified team. She will be touring with Laura Coup in the next month to the various SLHS locations. We also looked in to the Dave Ramsey program and found that this financial program would cost SLHS $1.7 million to offer to employees. The Dave Ramsey tools were right on target; however, we needed to find a less costly resource.

That's when the SLHS Retirement Team turned to the SLHS EAP team and the Saint Luke's Credit Union to see what we could do to support the financial wellness of our employees. In joining forces, the SLHS EAP program found the Family Credit Management group that could provide similar paper and online financial tools as the Dave Ramsey program, at a much lower cost.

To assist our employees with financial issues, the SLHS EAP is now partnering with Family Credit Management. They offer a range of services to assist with budget consultation, debt management, financial advice, financial resources, and credit report analysis that will not negatively impact your credit score. Click here for additional information about their services.

The Family Credit Management group also provided us with a very helpful 15-page booklet titled My Spending Plan. This booklet offers great ideas for planning your monthly budget, building an emergency fund, starting a savings account, keeping track of your property, and calculating your net worth. Hard copies of the booklet are available upon request by calling the SLHS EAP at 816-931-3073.

The Saint Luke's Credit Union will also have the Family Credit Management information available for their members; however, it's important that employees contact the SLHS EAP for any information on the Family Credit Management group. The SLHS EAP team will connect the employee directly with Family Credit Management to receive more assistance in becoming financially well.

The SLHS Retirement Team will continue its efforts by providing additional educational pieces on financial wellness. Please send any additional suggestions on financial wellness to the SLHS Retirement Team.

SLHS Annual Wellness State of the Union

You may have wondered: Why does Saint Luke's want employees to complete an annual health appraisal and an adult wellness exam every two years? Or, you may be curious about the results of the annual health appraisal and how it benefits us.

Tammy Leslie, senior director of Compensation and Benefits, will present a web conference to answer these questions. Leslie will share the results of the latest health appraisal as well as the purpose for the SLHS wellness strategy.

You can choose from two sessions: Thursday, April 19, or Wednesday, April 25, from 12 - 12:30 p.m. To register for either of these sessions email or call Gayle O'Connell at ext. 23807 and a meeting invitation will be sent to your calendar.

eRounds is published each Wednesday. Please submit any information for publication to slhrounds@saint-lukes.org by noon on Monday.
