 SLH March DAISY Award Winner
Jessica Pankey, B.S.N., R.N. IV
 | On March 26 the Nursing Recruitment and Retention Committee and East 3 staff surprised Pankey with this DAISY Award and a breakfast that included Cinnabon® cinnamon rolls. Pankey also received the Healer's Touch Sculpture, award certificate, DAISY pin, and a SLH parking spot. |
Jessica Pankey, B.S.N., R.N.
IV, recently received the DAISY Award in recognition for her compassionate and caring nursing skills as an R.N. on East 3. The DAISY Award was established by the DAISY Foundation in memory of J. Patrick Barnes who died at age 33 of ITP, an auto-immune disease.
Pankey was nominated for the DAISY Award by two families. One family member said, "While my father was in the hospital, her care and nursing skills as well as her advocacy for my dad's well-being was outstanding. She kept my dad clean and comfortable and made him feel he was in trusted hands. Upon being transferred to the fifth floor she continued to visit him at the end of her shift, which made his day." Another patient's mother commented," Jessica clearly deserves the DAISY Award. Her customer service and quality nursing skills are exemplary." And lastly, the patient's sister stated, "Jessica took care of my brother for eight days. She lifted him up in his bed because he was too weak. Jessica is truly nice and amazing!"
Pankey attended Avila College where she was a four-year letter winner in basketball and a two-year letter winner in volleyball. She was inducted in the Avila College Hall of Fame for her basketball skills, but nursing is her true love. She graduated from Avila in 1999 with a B.S. in nursing and began working at SLH on Main 5/East 5. After eight years, she transferred to East 3 where she has made some lifelong friends.
A Kansas City native, Pankey is the mother of five children ages 4 - 12. She and her family love sports, and she stays active by playing in a basketball and volleyball league. She also finds time to coach her kids' basketball games, go to movies, and listen to music.
Congratulations to Jessica Pankey, who like so many Saint Luke's Hospital nurses deserves a big thank you for her extraordinary and compassionate nursing care. Do you know a nurse deserving of a DAISY Award? Send an email to daisyaward@saint-lukes.org or pick up a nomination form located in most SLH waiting rooms.

Senior Leadership Patient Safety Rounds
Coming soon to your hospital This year, the SLHS Patient Safety Committee is fostering Senior Leadership Patient Safety Rounds as an outgrowth of our Patient Safety Strategic Plan. Expect to see the "C-Suite" personnel visiting every floor and unit in your hospital at least quarterly. During these patient safety rounds, they want to hear from you on how you think the next patient in your unit or clinical area will be harmed. This kind of information is critical to ensure that Saint Luke's is the safest place to get care, and we believe the people at the bedside are the ones who are best able to provide this information. We also know from national organizations like AHRQ that Senior Leadership Patient Safety Rounds reinforce a safety culture, where leadership and staff share in the responsibility to create a culture of accountability, and where everyone is empowered to change the environment around us. Information you give to senior leadership will be addressed, and follow-up will be provided. So, don't be surprised if your CEO stops you in the hall and asks, "How do you think the next patient in your clinical area will be harmed?" Provide an honest and thoughtful answer. Patient safety is our collective responsibility!

The Grass is Greener: Employee Engagement Team Update
Thank you for taking the Employee Satisfaction Survey. Participation numbers increased to 73.1 percent, which helped us meet our goal of 70 percent particpation. This was a big increase from last year, which was 56.9 percent. A special congratulations to 21 departments for completing the survey at 100 percent participation during the first week the survey was available.
ˇGracias por participar en nuestra Encuesta de Opinión para el Empleado!
Next steps for the Employee Engagement Team (EET) will be to receive the overall scores from the survey and determine what objectives/goals we should work on in 2012 based on the significant indicators. Until those results are available, the EET continues to work on 2011 objectives which include improving communication, teamwork, and recognition.

Protein - It's Good for You!
Protein is needed to build and repair tissues and sustain a variety of body processes. Proteins are made up of amino acids, which are not stored in the body like carbohydrates and fats. Therefore, we need to consume some protein each day to keep our body healthy.
Protein is found in many sources of food including animals and vegetables. But not all sources are equally healthy for us. Some animal sources of protein, such as red meat, contain saturated fats. Research has shown that eating too much red meat increases our risk of developing colon cancer, heart disease, and diabetes.
Better sources of animal protein are fish and poultry. Vegetable sources of protein include nuts, seeds, beans, peas, and whole grains. Remember that consuming excess protein will be stored as fat and can contribute to weight gain. This month, visit Broadway Dining and make smart selections for protein by choosing more beans, nuts, poultry, and fish. For additional tips, go to the Your Health Matters - never settle webpage or contact Broadway Dining at ext. 27542.

New blood products and procedures directive
Click here to view the new SLH Blood Products and Procedures Directive, a form for patients who do not accept blood products. This is not a consent form. Similar to a DPA, it is a directive which clearly documents a patient's specific requests concerning blood products.
Place the completed blood directive under the "Signed Documents" tab in the chart. Notify Blood Conservation at 816-932-6183, or ext. 26183, of any patient who has blood product concerns. Members of the blood conservation team will be available outside the cafeteria April 16 to answer any questions.
Medication Safety Corner
The Joint Commission has made anticoagulation a national patient safety goal due to the risks and complications that can occur with the therapy. In coordination with these standards, the Medication Safety Team at Saint Luke's Hospital has decided to focus on heparin to help improve patient safety and outcomes. Read the full article.
Note of appreciation
I was in the cafeteria and had forgotten my debit card and cash. I was at the register ready to pay when it hit me I had no means of paying since being a corporate employee I can't swipe my badge. As I was telling the cashier I would come back to pay after I went back to get my money, a very nice lady standing behind me told me to go on, she'd take care of it. I told her I'd come back, but she insisted on paying for it. I did not get to read her badge, but I'd like to tell her thanks so much for what she did, and tell her her smile is as big and pretty as her heart!

ACC by the numbers
About 20 Saint Luke's Mid America Heart Institute cardiologists and clinicians attended the American College of Cardiology (ACC) national conference in Chicago in March, where they joined 40,000 of their colleagues from across the nation.
MAHI was exceptionally well represented at the conference. In addition to presenting their leading-edge research, many Saint Luke's cardiologists also served as experts on panels. It is absolutely incredible and rare to have this magnitude of representation. We're truly the region's heart care leader!
