State Association and Kosciusko County SWCD Receive Conservation Innovation Grant

Soil health is the focus of a Conservation Innovation Grant (CIG) the Indiana Association of SWCDs was awarded last week. It will help fund an exciting three-year project that builds on the successes of the Conservation Cropping Systems Initiative. Read the news release here.


Kosciusko County SWCD also received a CIG grant for their project which proposes to implement cover crops across 50 percent of a sub-watershed in a tile-drained agricultural landscape. Congratulations! Review all CIG grantees here.


Removing QuickBooks from CCE Computers

The District Support Specialists and IASWCD recently sent these documents to all SWCDs with updated information and recommendations for the removal of QuickBooks software from CCE computers. If you have any further questions, please contact your DSS or Jennifer.


Conservation Beyond 2016 Task Force Report to State Soil Conservation Board

In recent years, several issues have converged that affect the operations and effectiveness of Districts, including tighter budgets and rising operating costs. Last fall, the State Soil Conservation Board (SSCB) established a task force which over the course of one year would discuss these trends and recommend proactive courses of action in addressing the challenges and opportunities available for the future of conservation delivery. The Task Force's report, presented last week, is available here (PDF).

Watershed Leadership Academy Registration Open

If you're interested in water quality and watersheds, consider applying for the 2013 Indiana Watershed Leadership Academy. Participants will be given the chance to engage in basic and advanced level watershed topics covering leadership principles, watershed science, organization and communication, technology and GIS, stakeholder involvement techniques and policy skills, and more. Participants will also earn a professional certificate in Watershed Management. Registration ends November 2. Learn more and register here. 


NACD Urban and Community Conservation Webinars 

The National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) is launching a monthly series of free one-hour conservation webinars. "Forests At Work" DVD Available for Sale

Over the past year, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources' Division of Forestry collaborated with WFYI public television in Indianapolis to produce "Indiana Expeditions: Forests At Work." This hour-long documentary is geared towards the general public and details the social, ecological and economic values of forests. It is now available for $10. Order here.

The GACDS seeks an Executive Director. GACDS is a 501(c)(3) organization representing the 40 conservation districts across Georgia and is dedicated to the conservation of the state's abundant natural resources. Its mission is to "Provide leadership and support to the boards of supervisors, soil and water conservation districts, and their partners though grassroots programs that promotes natural resource stewardship." August 2012 Lake and River Enhancement (LARE) grants, which help care for Indiana's water bodies, total more than $814,000The projects involve 13 counties and more than 40 lakes and rivers. See the full list of grant recipients here.

NACD Seeks Presentation Proposals for Annual Meeting & District Share Fair

Additional Drought Assistance Funding Provided Through WHIP
Indiana's Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) announced an additional 1.5 million dollars received to help eligible crop and livestock producers. Funding was provided through theWildlife Habitat Incentive Program (WHIP). Contact your local NRCS office for more information.
