Greetings!
The Orleans Parish School Board and Recovery School District today issued a joint press release announcing the members selected to serve on the Blue Ribbon Capital Investments Commission.
Some background information and synopsis of the release are below. ***This email is created by Ken Ducote and Rose Drill-Peterson on behalf of the Eastbank Collaborative of Charter Schools and is not an official correspondence from the Orleans Parish School Board***

Background
- Commission was created through the October 2011 amendments to the School Facility Master Plan for Orleans Parish (SFMPOP)
- Purpose was defined then to be the development of strategic recommendations for on-going capital investments and building maintenance "to ensure that our facilities remain world-class"
- Original reference to the Commission can be found on p. 21 here
- Major concerns requiring such a strategy:
- Due to insufficient funding, many existing schools currently attended by thousands of students will not be renovated up to contemporary standards
- The Master Plan only includes stabilization or "refurbishment" of those buildings to minimally protect them until renovations or replacements are eventually funded (see p. 17 of link above)
- Existing and past funding has been insufficient to properly maintain school buildings to keep them at their original quality and to protect the public's investment in them
- If a properly funded and executed maintenance program is not established, the buildings will soon deteriorate
