At a Press conference this afternoon, RSD Superintendent Patrick Dobard announced the Recovery School District's plan to "establish a diverse set of high school pathways to college and to career," or Commitment #4 of the RSD's What Will it Take?  

 

Starting in Fall of 2013, high school students will have the opportunity to earn industry-based certifications in areas like health care, construction, digital media, and culinary arts. Click here to read the RSD's press release on the announcement.

 

Details highlighted at the press conference today include:

  • Four RSD high schools will be transferred to new operators for the 2012 school year:
    • John McDonogh High will be operated by Future is Now
    • G. W. Carver High (beginning with 9th grade in 2012) will be operated by Collegiate Academies
    • Schwarz Academy will be operated by Crescent Leadership Academy
    • Walter L. Cohen High will be operated by New Orleans College Prep
  • John McDonogh and its new school operator, Future is Now, will partner with Delgado Community College and the Louisiana Restaurant Association
  • The new programs will be college prep and partnered with "Industry Partnered Career and Technical Education (CTE)"
  • Curriculum will be aligned with the industry needs so skills learned can be matched with employment opportunities
  • Students will be afforded opportunities for internships and job shadowing
  • Students will be able to earn college credits while in high school
  • Schools will have multiple pathways to college and career including accelerated programs and enhanced programs for expelled students
  • Failing programs will be replaced with strong academic programs

Additionally, the RSD distributed a second press release today announcing new operators for two elementary schools and the closure of a third:

  • Joseph Craig Elementary will be operated by Friends of King
  • McDonogh 42 Charter School will be operated by Choice Foundation
  • Dr. Charles Drew Elementary will be closed and the RSD is working with KIPP New Orleans to expand capacity accommodate students from Drew

Finally, the RSD announced the following meeting schedule for parents to meet with representatives of the RSD and new charter operators: 

  • John McDonogh High - Held earlier tonight, January 23 at 6 p.m. in the John McDonogh Library  
  • Joseph Craig Elementary - January 26 at 6 p.m. in the Craig Basement
  • McDonogh 42 Charter - January 31 at 6 p.m. in the McDonogh 42 Auditorium
  • Drew Elementary - February 2 at 6 p.m. in the Drew Cafeteria
  • George Washington Carver High - February 7 at 6 p.m. in the Carver Library
