Greetings!
The Orleans Parish School Board will host four additional Public Hearings throughout the first two weeks of November to provide constituents the opportunity to review and comment on the proposed OPSB redistricting plan and offer a first glimpse at four alternatives to the base plan.
By law, redistricting must:
- Be completed by March 2012 and will affect next OPSB elections,
- Be done after each decennial US census,
- Adhere to "one-man / one-vote" principle,
- Be based on latest official Census (i.e., 2010) and cannot take into account projected future changes, and
- Be submitted for approval by US Justice Department (DOJ) to ensure it has no discriminatory purpose or effect and does not regress on minority representation in accordance with the 1965 Voting Rights Act.
The previous public meetings discussed the current districts' boundaries and population levels, as well as the process required under state and federal law. Click here to read the prior report on the redistricting process. The proposed redistricting plans and meeting schedule can be found below.
