November 2011

TWO WEEKS. FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS. ONE BALD GIRL.

On Saturday, November 12, after fundraising $5000 for Camp Kesem GW, Meredith McGrath, AKA "Zamboni" will be shaving her head in support of the families that Camp Kesem serves. Zamboni is a sophomore who is on the Camp Kesem Executive Board as one of our Camper Care co-chairs. She has decided to be the face of our fall fundraising campaign, literally, as GW's campus has been taken over by posters bearing her face alongside the phrase "What would she do for Camp Kesem?"

Her decision to shave her head is a sign of her commitment to this organization and of support for the families with whom we work.

On the day of the event, we are inviting our campers and their families to watch Meredith shave her head in what will surely be a powerful gesture of solidarity.

Meet Meredith, AKA Zamboni

CKGW: Where did your name "Zamboni" come from?

Z: Elmo, [another counselor] picked it out for me. Actually, at my

first ever EBoard meeting, we were sitting in the conference room

and we heard a loud noise, and someone said it sounded like a

zamboni. And then Elmo said, "That should be your nickname!" and it kind of stuck.

CKGW: What was your favorite part of Camp Kesem this year?

Z: There's nothin' like a game of kickball with the Green unit. We were unrivaled.

CKGW: Favorite camp song?

Z: It's the 60's Party - CKGW's song. It's our jam.

CKGW: Tell us about your campaign.

Z: Well, because I love CK soooo much, I'm willing to shave my head for it basically.

CKGW: Why did you decide to shave your head?

Z: Because Zamboni likes being crazy. Also, my hair is kind of curly and I want to change it up a bit and make it more Zamboni-like.

CKGW: Would you rather be attacked by a giant snake or a hungry piranha?

Z: A giant snake because then I would feel like Harry Potter.

CKGW: If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

Z: The ability to get A's in all my classes without effort.

Fall Camper Reunion At Jumbo's Pumpkin Patch!

We had a great time at our Fall Camper Reunion, which we held at Jumbo's Pumpkin Patch in Middletown, Maryland! Campers AND counselors enjoyed the petting zoo, hayride, pumpkin patch, pony rides, and the corn maze.

It was great to catch up with old friends and sing our favorite camp songs that we miss so dearly during the school year!

Stay tuned for information about our upcoming Winter reunion, coming soon!

Camp Kesem Buzz:

On Sunday, November 6, Camp Kesem GW will be running the kids' tent at the Breathe Deep DC 5K for
the LUNGevity Foundation, a great organization that funds research for the early detection and successful treatment of lung cancer.

This walk is to raise money and awareness for the search for a Lung Cancer cure, and is of special importance to Camp Kesem GW because it is organized by the father of Pasta and Cupcake, two of our special campers from the last three summers. At this event, we will be spreading the Camp Kesem magic with all the children who attend!
