Dear Educator,

Reading Is Cool Presented by Comerica Bank is a free and unique literacy program developed by the charitable arm of the San Jose Sharks, the Sharks Foundation, which focuses on public K-6 grade classrooms in Santa Clara County and southern Alameda County (Fremont, Newark and Union City). The program promotes the importance of reading while sharing the excitement and enjoyment of a good book. Through a multifaceted approach that includes exclusive experiences and incentives, students are encouraged to succeed as individual readers and as a classroom team.

Reading Is Cool Presented by Comerica Bank runs from October through May, parallel to the San Jose Sharks regular season. In the 2011-12 school year, the Sharks Foundation hosted almost 1,000 classrooms and 25,000 students, making it a record year for the program. It is our hope to continue expanding our reach and lend a positive literacy experience to every elementary school in our local community.

Teachers involved in the 2011-12 Reading Is Cool Presented by Comerica Bank program witnessed higher reading levels, increased motivation to read and a more positive classroom experience among their students. As one Dan Callejon Elementary 1st Grade Teacher nicely summarized, "I am a big Sharks fan and HUGE fan of the Reading is Cool program! I really, really appreciate the support in helping kids gain confidence, reading skills, and a sense of belonging to their community. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!"

Registration for the 2012-13 program will open on Wednesday, August 15 at 8:00 a.m. on sjsharks.com/readingiscool. The first ten teachers to register will receive a classroom visit from mascot and program "spokesfish," S.J. Sharkie. New this year, schools that register over five classrooms will be entered into a drawing for a celebratory kickoff assembly featuring S.J. Sharkie and Sharks Foundation staff! If you have teachers that may be interested in registering for the program, please pass this information along to them.

I urge you to contact me at [email protected] or visit sjsharks.com/readingiscool if you have any questions or require further information about the program.

Sincerely,

Kelly Esrey
