President's Message

Greetings fellow alumni,

My term as President is nearing an end, and I have decided not to run for re-election. I can look back over the past two years with pride, and note many significant activities accomplished by the Calvin Coolidge Alumni Association, Inc. (CCAA). Included among them are: being named the Dollars for Scholars national region "Chapter of the year" in 2011; two successful breakfast award events, including the 25th anniversary of our organization; the first dinner event since I have been an active member (1991); the award of ten scholarships in 2010 and eleven in 2011; and the selection of six additional alumni honorees over the past two years. These are just some of our major accomplishments.

In addition, CCAA enhanced its grant program, under the leadership of co-founder Frank Jones, who also serves as Director of Grants. The grant program enabled funding for the Summer Youth Employment Program and after school programs each year, providing employment and counseling for the youth of our community.

The dilapidated greenhouse on the Whittier Street side has been targeted for renovation, which will soon be a structure we will take pride in as well as become a teaching mechanism for the students. Our Vice-President, James Proctor, has been working with the administration at Coolidge to make the greenhouse and adjacent memorial garden, a place for students to both relax and learn.

The monthly board meetings have presented opportunities for the officers and other participants to enable the alumni association to grow. We have passed into a new and stronger phase of operation, and will continue to grow with your help. If you have ever considered becoming an officer or member of the Board of Directors, I urge you to attend the annual general membership meeting on March 3, 2012, and either run for office, or vote for the candidate of your choice.

We are actively meeting and negotiating with Ward 4 Councilwoman, Muriel Bowser, who has taken a genuine interest in CCAA and is there for us when we need her.  Mayor Vincent Gray has also been supportive, and has attended our breakfast for the past several years, both as Chairman of the D.C. City Council, and as Mayor of Washington, D.C. Present Chair of the City Council, Kwame Brown, is another strong supporter of CCAA.

It's been an exciting and some times challenging two years, but now it's time to move on and pass the torch.

I thank all of you who supported me these past two years.

Marcus Brown, President

Calvin Coolidge Alumni Association, Inc.

Remarks from our Co-Founders

"Happy New Year" to all and we hope that 2012 brings you good

Frank, Barrington, & James

health and prosperity. Last year the Calvin Coolidge Alumni Association (CCAA) celebrated 25 years of giving, mentoring, supporting, funding, teaching, learning, planning, and investing in our students, families and the Coolidge community. We are proud of our legacy and we also understand that there is much more to be done. We began the year with a January 18th meeting at Coolidge to discuss the modernization plan to rebuild and update the facility. The overwhelming turnout by alumni, students, parents and the community was a clear indication of the collective will and determination of people who believe in our school and the mission it has to educate our youth and serve our community with distinction. Continue to stay informed about the progress and next steps in the modernization process and how we will need to work together with D.C. Public Schools toward the funding and completion of the school modernization goals. March is election time for CCAA. The association meeting and election date is March 3, 2012 (see below). Plan to attend the meeting and vote for your fellow members to lead the organization. Stay tuned for more CCAA alumni news announcements and make sure to participate in alumni class activities and other CCAA events.

Sincerely yours,

Barrington D. Scott, Frank Jones III and James A. Scott, Jr.

Student Profile

Tunisia McCoy

Calvin Coolidge High school senior Tunisia McCoy is a semi-finalist in the Fourth Annual DC-CAPital Stars Talent Competition. The competition showcases outstanding artistic abilities of college-bound students from the District of Columbia Public and Public Charter Schools. The public can cast their votes for their favorite contestant(s) by registering to vote from January 9, 2012 through January 31, 2012.

From the online tallies and input from a local panel of judges, 10 finalists will be selected to showcase their artistic abilities at a special performance on Monday, March 5, 2012 in the Eisenhower Theater at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. A panel of celebrity judges, along with help from the audience, will select the winners who will receive DC-CAP college scholarships that will be applied toward the student's first year of college.

Tunisia's comments to the judges "I was certain that I would be involved in dance for a lifetime after I transferred schools my ninth grade year and decided to try and join my high school dance team, The Calvin Coolidge Diamond Dancers. However, I missed the ball because I was timid and concerned of what others would think. I was that "new kid" in school who'd never been on an official dance team before. My chance passed me by. I didn't enjoy going home every day after school thinking of how I could be helping the dance team and vice versa; so when that chance hit me a second time, my body moved in its direction - whether I was emotionally ready or not - for my inner being was ready to be unleashed."

"Obviously, I have a passion for dance and even though I've been infatuated with it from childhood because I have grown to appreciate and value the lessons it has taught me. It truly saddens me when others not only downplay all of  the arts' hard work, but its necessary involvement in today's and tomorrow's society. For all of those who are creative and feel free to express their artistic beauties, let us congratulate those who have paved the way for us. We must fight; we must endure; and above all, we must succeed. I will be with art every step of the way."  Click the link below to view Tunisia's complete comments and performance.

Alumni Profile

Jesse Rhines, Ph.D

Class of 1968

During my senior year at Coolidge (1967-1968), I wasn't what could be consider an inspired student. I cleaned erasers in Mrs. MacDonald's homeroom and acted in one of the senior comedy skits in my paisley Nehru jacket and dark shades.  But when Wendy W ilson said, "Jesse, we need a Black Student's Union" a light went on and we formed "Impact"  Coolidge's first Black Student Union.  African American politics and International Relations became my focus as after graduation I went from a Summer Program for the disadvantaged at Yale through MAs at Yale, UCLA and a PhD at UC Berkeley.  I'm now retired and living  in Los Angeles, California.

While researching a new book in the library I found two books that peaked my interest, "My Oxford/My Cambridge" and "My Harvard/My Yale".  They contain short college-day memoirs from graduates-most all are white. Black Yalies had been thrilled to find only recently that Edward Alexander Bouchet was Yale's first African American graduate in 1874.  History is important for a coherent African American culture.

I began researching "BLACK HARVARD/BLACK YALE" in 1998 while an African American Studies professor at Rutgers University-Newark.  In 2011, having not secured a publisher, I self-published and was pleased that the Yale Alumni Magazine gave it a great review.  Read this testament to America's greatest hopes for progress in race and education:

Varsity Football Team Win Academic Challenge
Oshiomogho Atogwe I Am Foundation Academic Challenge
 for highest team average GPA.

Coolidge Science Teacher and Varsity Football Coach, Natalie Randolph announces the news that Coolidge's Varsity Football Team has won the Oshiomogho Atogwe I Am Foundation Academic Challenge for highest team grade point average (GPA).

" I just want to thank you all for helping the boys achieve their goal. They have won $10,000 for the program and they deserve it. Keep encouraging them and challenging them. We won by a very small margin so every little bit counts. Our average GPA was 3.068 and the second place finisher, Warren County High School, came in with a team GPA of 3.060! They will be receiving an award of $5.000 toward their program." Coach Randolph commented when announcing the award.

Redskins safety Oshiomogho "OJ" Atogwe issued a challenge to high school football programs in the Washington, DC and surrounding area during the 2011 season. Football programs were in competition with one another for the highest team grade point average during the 2011 - 2012 school year.

Laura, Cathy & Tim.

We were privileged at the 25th Anniversary Breakfast on October 8,2011 to have three Dollars for Scholars (DFS) officers in attendance: Cathy Card Sterling, Vice President, Scholarship America; Tim Christensen, Scholarship America National Board of Trustees; and Laura Rheintgen, East Coast Scholarship America Team. Cathy and Tim gave a brief synopsis of our partnership with Scholarship America - Dollars for Scholars, and pledged their support to our future endeavors. CCAA has been an affiliate member of DFS for nearly 20 years.

In October 2011, CCAA sent our scholarship chair, Monica Jordan, to a training conference in Philadelphia, Pa. to become acquainted with new technologies known as "ChapterNet". This training will be ongoing, and will enable us to better assist Coolidge students, and other applicants, to apply for scholarships. Once enrolled in a college or university, we will also have the ability to track the students and sometimes offer further assistance.

Stay tuned for updates on our progress!

Third Annual Two-Mile Fun Walk!
Frank R. Williams Scholarship Fund, Inc.

williams walk signIt's that time of year again to get your walking shoes on and get ready for the Third Annual Frank R. Williams Scholarship Fund, Inc. Two-Mile Fun Walk! The walk will be held Saturday, April 28, 2012 at 8:00am at CCHS. The walk will start in the breezeway between the school and the Frank R. Williams Activity Center.

In 2006, Frank's wife, Helen Williams (Class of '62), and daughters, Ryann and Randi, started the Fund to share his ideals with future generations of students. The mission of the Fund is to provide financial support to CCHS senior student athletes who are seeking higher education. Awardees must display success on the field, exhibit strong leadership qualities and a commitment to education as well as servicing their community. This annual walk benefits those CCHS students striving for a higher education.

Since 2010, the Fund has held the walk as a way to uphold the legacy of Frank, our coach, our teacher, our colleague, our friend, our family and our fellow alumnus. Frank was devoted to each of these roles, especially being a dedicated teacher and coach.  He instilled in his students the importance of receiving an education, working hard and being a leader in the community.

We look forward to seeing you on April 28th! Registration and additional information about the walk can be obtained by visiting www.frwfund.com.
