President's Message

Greetings fellow alumni,

I first would like to welcome the Calvin Coolidge Class of 2011 to the ranks of alumni of our alma mater. CCAA was well represented by several alumni at the graduation ceremony along with several benefactors of some of our "name" scholarships.  This includes - Phyllis "Ma" Wells, Wilma Faulkner and Robyn Barnes (mom and sister of past president Neil Faulkner), Mrs. Gulatt-Peterson, Mr. Frank Weathers, and Willie and Tony Mitchell (mother and son of Yuletta MacDonald Mitchell, Class of '65).  CCAA awarded a total of $10,000 at the graduation!  These efforts we have put forth are the reason that Dollars for Scholars (DFS) has selected CCAA as their National Region Chapter of the Year.  We will be represented by our Scholarship chairperson, Monica Jordan, at the DFS training conference in Philadelphia on October 8, 2011 to accept this honor. My thanks go out to Monica and her committee for the years of hard work during their selection process each year.

Guest speaker at the graduation was Theodore (Ted) Wells, Class of '68.  Ted delivered a message that the graduates could relate to, with the message as I understood to be: even an average student can rise to successes they may never have imagined.

We look forward now to our 25th year Gala Celebration on October 8, 2011.  This event begins with breakfast in the morning, concluding with reunion dinner and dance that evening.  I urge you to get together with your classmates to purchase table tickets without delay.

Remember, prices will go up After August 1st.  Information on tickets is contained in this newsletter.  We expect to have a sellout at both events, providing a weekend of comradery and good times.

Thanks for your continued support!

Marcus Brown, President, CCAA, Inc..

Frank, Barrington, & James

A  Note from our Co-Founders

As we embark upon our 25th Anniversary Celebration of CCAA, I am reminded of the friendships, dedication, and determination of my fellow founders.  We truly believed that we could make a difference in our own small way.  In the beginning we strived to surprise each other weekly with information and contacts that could be used to move our new organization forward.  Because of my relationship with Kappa Alpha Psi, Fraternity, The Washington Alumni Chapter and then Polemarch, Samuel McCoy, we were granted permission to hold our weekly meeting at the Historic Kappa House at 1708 S St. NW, Washington DC.  In the beginning (fall of 1986) we met each week until we drafted the first copy of the articles of incorporation which were submitted and approved on February 17, 1987. We made a point that each of us would make a contribution. James Scott would become the first President, Barrington Scott, Vice President and Frank Jones, Secretary/Treasurer.

Frank took leadership in alumni recruitment, maintaining the archives and getting Keith Tapscott to design the CCAA logo. Barrington, worked on the implementation of our Alumni (Life Membership) program and scholarship breakfast.  Our President, James Scott set the footwork at Coolidge High School, meeting with the Principal and faculty about Academics and Athletics.  During that same year 1987, the founders of CCAA and Roosevelt High School also established the "Clash of the Titians" Football Classic for the purpose of Alumni participation and school spirit socialization.  As founders we were determined to make sure that the roots of our organizations, motto and focus would always stay intact.

Over the last 25 years we have continued to give scholarships, train young people for leadership through mentorship, and provide career workshops, and support academics and athletics. Because of this vehicle, Alumni old and new meet each year with a since of pride.  Thank you, Calvin Coolidge family, Council-members, board-members, Alumni, students, parents, teachers, administrators, business owners, and community leaders who believed in our motto, "Upward Mobility through Academics and Unity a Winning Combination".

I look forward to you joining us at this year 25th Anniversary Celebration and Alumni Scholarship Breakfast and Reunion Dinner Dance Gala.

Sincerely yours,

Barrington D. Scott, Frank Jones III and James A. Scott, Jr.

Dollars for Scholars " Chapter of the Year "

The Chapter of the Year Award honors and recognizes Dollars for Scholars chapters that have performed outstanding service to their community and that exemplify the commitment of Dollars for Scholars and its parent organization, Scholarship America, to ensuring all students have access to post-secondary education. As the National Region Chapter of the Year, the Calvin Coolidge Alumni Association will receive a $250 scholarship and will be entered into the National Chapter of the Year competition. The chapter selected as the National Chapter of the Year will receive a $1,000 scholarship.

Our Scholarship chairperson, Monica Jordan, will represent CCAA at the DFS Annual Training Conference in Philadelphia on October 8, 2011 to accept our "Chapter of the Year" award. Many thanks go out to Monica and her committee for the years of hard work during their selection process each year.

The Calvin Coolidge Alumni Association takes an active interest in activities that help students prepare for and successfully complete their post-secondary education. Alumni involvement has ranged from helping to secure funding for the development of a study and media center at Coolidge High School, and sponsoring career day activities to mentor and help students find and apply for additional sources of financial aid.  Members of the alumni association also maintain their connections with scholarship recipients beyond high school. They believe that this personal involvement helps to insure successful completion of the post-secondary experience.

Eighty-Seventh Commencement Exercise
Attorney Theodore V. Wells Jr. (class of 1968) delivers Commencement Address

Calvin Coolidge High School 2011 Senior Class Graduation

Principle Thelma M. Jarrett, Attorney Theodore V. Wells, Jr. (class of 1968), and members of the Coolidge staff  enter the Frank R. Williams Activity Center proceeding   Calvin Coolidge High School's Eighty Seventh Commencement Exercise.

Alumni Theodore (Tokey) Wells, Jr. gave an inspiring commencement address to the seniors. His message focused on the need for the students to believe in themselves. He spoke about his time at Coolidge, and how once in college he made the decision to truly apply himself  to his educational goals, and how that decision has taken him further then he ever thought possible.

This years senior class completed more then 800 college application. Over 85% of graduates from the class of 2011 have been accepted to a college or university. The Senior Class has received over two million dollars in scholarships and grants. CCAA gave out over $10,000.00 in scholarship money to members of this years Senior Class. Members of the alumni association also maintain their connections with past scholarship recipients. We believe that this personal involvement helps to insure successful completion of the postsecondary experience.

Frank R. Williams Scholarship Fund, Inc.
Second Annual Two-Mile Fun Walk

On May 21, 2011, the Frank R. Williams Scholarship Fund, Inc. held their Second Annual Two-Mile Fun Walk. The morning began with a boisterous welcome by Councilmember Muriel Bowser. During her remarks, she reminded all in attendance that they were walking in honor of Calvin Coolidge High School (CCHS) students seeking higher education. The Williams family kicked off the walk with CCHS alumni, faculty, and neighbors of the Ward 4 community by their side. The start began at the breezeway between the school and the Frank R. Williams Activity Center. As the walkers made the two-mile loop around the CCHS campus, it served as a reminder that this annual event not only helps to sustain the Fund, but it also provides an opportunity to remember the late Coach Frank R. Williams.

In 2006, Frank's wife, Helen Williams, and daughters, Ryann and Randi, started the Fund to share his ideals with future generations of students. The mission of the Fund is to provide financial support to CCHS senior student athletes who are seeking higher education. Awardees must display success on the field, exhibit strong leadership qualities and a commitment to education as well as servicing their community. Additional information about the Fund can be obtained by visiting  www.frwfund.com.

Grant Programs
State of the Program

The Calvin Coolidge Alumni Association Inc.'s (CCAA Inc) Grant Programs are alive and well.  We've just ended our Out of School Time (OST) after-school program funded by the DC Children Youth and Investment Trust Corporation (CYITC).

This year we elected to apply for a newly developed program "Encouraging Innovation". This new program provides opportunities for innovation and provisional resources that would allow creativity, growth and foundational structure. The Encouraging Innovation Program (EI) allowed every organization a base year opportunity with two reapplying years at the same funding amounts. The first year could be a developing year and not necessarily roll out a program, but use lessons learned along with coaching resources through the Trust to prepare, grow and eventually activate a program the following year based on evaluations and reapplying. CCAA Inc. decided, due to its experiences and various collaborations to actually rolls its program out in the first year.

Our beginning collaborators were Architect Construction and Engineering (ACE) Mentoring Program, Technology Playground (Entrepreneurship), Safe Takoma (Conflict Resolution, Rite of Passage, Community Conferencing, Dialogue Circles), Flame Financial (Financial Literacy), Byte Back, Inc. (Computer Repair Training), Carnegie Institute (Science), African Woman's Cancer Awareness Association (AWCAA) Cancer Awareness. Programs were designed to offer students experiential opportunities by engaging exploration in Agricultural and Environmental analysis through the Coolidge Community Greenhouse Garden project, increased self-esteem skills to better deal with conflict situations, developmental social services towards more organic support systems, disciplines in patience, critical thinking and life skills. Employment Readiness, the integration of technology and entrepreneurship to expose, develop and enhance skills to setup, develop and operate their own business through basic concept teaching and utilization of computers. For many reason, from student participation levels, program direction, clarity/ lack of support, loss of staff, collaborators dropping out, our "Encouraging Innovation" initiative took many different twist and turns, all for the better in terms of the best interest of the students.  We completed the program year with ACE Mentoring, Technology Playground, African Woman's cancer Awareness Association and our newly instituted Robotics Program.

We were awarded fourteen out of the sixteen grants that we've applied for over the past four years. We've had oversight of various programs consisting of Parenting, Truancy, Workforce Development, Traditional Summer Programs, Summer Youth Service Corp, Summer Youth Service Corp Mapping, Out of School Time, DC Slam Dunk for Life, Conflict Resolution (Help Increase The Peace Program), and the Encouraging Innovation initiative.

CCAA Inc. opportunities to make a difference in the lives of Calvin Coolidge High school students has been made possible through the continuing efforts of alumni volunteers, collaborations with the aforementioned partnering organization, and the hard work of our Grant Operations Staff, which includes Grant Writers, Administrators, Program Directors, Program Managers, Teachers/Instructors, Guest Speakers, Technical Support, Evaluators, and CCAA Inc.'s Board of Directors.

Our successes would also not have been possible without the outstanding efforts of alumni Greg Roberts ('72), who initiated the contact that resulted in the organization receiving 501(C)(3) non-profit status, in addition to CYITC awarding us our initial two grants. The support of Ms. Thelma Jarrett (Principal), former Principal Nelson L. Burton, Terry Goings (alumni honoree/CCHS Parent Coordinator), and Coolidge's administrative support staff to include DCPS and its OST Office.

The Alumni Association's opportunities are unlimited in terms of making an impactful difference in the lives of Calvin Coolidge High School students. During the current economic downturn, CCAA has been awarded grants of $407,000.00 since 2007. The initial grant of $35,000.00 was used to create the Parent Alumni Community Resource Center (PACRC) located at Coolidge. PACRC was the very first parent resource center to be located in a DC Public School.

In closing, let me say, we continue to need your help by way of additional grant support (writers, experts, RFP exposure to additional grants etc.).   We urge you to get involved in whatever way you can and help us give back to the Calvin Coolidge High School Community. CCAA, Inc. is ready and excited as we move to continue engaging our Coolidge students and making a impactful difference in their lives.

THE COOLIDGE LEGACY!!

Friends of the Coolidge Garden

Maintaining a garden and growing our community

Friends of the Garden -

The fall 2011 season is around the corner and hot weather vegetables have been sprouting and will appear in Coolidge High School's still new garden and outdoor classroom.

On April 30, 2011 we had our spring garden day. With the help of our ASLA team, students and community members we weeded, planted and mulched. Our massive meadow garden was and still is one of our largest challenges. We were able to seed the meadow with perennial wildflowers, remove and re-plant remaining red twigs around the swale as well as plant vines at the green screens. The irrigation system was recharged and turned on for the season.

On June 10, 2011 we had "Impact Day", Deloitte Financial Service's National / International Service and Volunteer Day. Deloitte chose "Impact Day" to collaborate with CCAA .  O deliotte teamur garden was the perfect site for them to put their staff to work in the community. This collaborative effort allowed us to get the vegetable beds planted with Tomatoes, Watermelon, Squash, Herbs and Ornamentals. Lots of weeding and maintenance took place as well as additional planting of Zinnias and Sunflowers in the meadow gard en.

On July 1, 2011 we had a scheduled visit from DCPS's School Garden Specialist / Department of Wellness and Nutrition representative Sam Ullery. CCAA, was able to give Sam the complete overview of how the garden got started, how it is maintained, what the future plans are and how we might be able to assist DCPS with other school initiatives around school gardening.

On July 13, and July 20, 2011 Carol Herwig of Casey Trees gave an instructional presentation to our Environmental Employment Readiness SYEP / Summer Youth Employment Program participants. Carol utilized the garden to talk and teach about the many career opportunities involved in the garden.  She then went on to speak to our 45 young people about additional career opportunities, in addition to teaching them the art of maintenance and pruning the Coolidge Garden.

If you wish to join the Friends of the Garden, please visit our "Friends of the Coolidge Garden" website page and complete the volunteer registration form.   You do not need to be alumni to join, neighbors and faculty are welcome.   Hope you will join us and help make Coolidge High School's new garden a big success.
