President's Message

Greetings classmates, friends and families,

Marcus Brown '65The past year has been full of activities and events bringing the Calvin Coolidge Alumni Association, Inc. (CCAA) to a new level of accomplishment. We have grown from a small scale volunteer organization to a much larger, better organized business.  Volunteer organizations, in order to be successful, must be operated as a business in order to accomplish their goals.  You would be amazed to see, as I have, the growth of CCAA, as it flourished into the efficient organization it has become.  At one time, our basic objectives were to award scholarships to Coolidge students, and honor our graduates at the annual breakfast.  We continue to do these things, but have subsequently moved on to new activities that include: the renovation of the greenhouse at Coolidge; grant programs providing activities and employment to students in the summer; fundraising assistance for the athletic teams, band and cheerleaders and finally, expansion of scholarship awards.

As you may have guessed, new activities require more support.  I request, as my predecessors Neil Faulkner, and Frank Jones frequently did, your help.  Support may be in the form of giving your time and physical presence, or donating money when needed.  Many of you are doing so now, and forgive me if you continue to see requests for help, but remember, I only ask that you give what you can, when you can.  Keep in mind, CCAA is a 501c (3) recognized organization by the Internal Revenue Service, and your contributions are tax deductable.

Stay in touch with us by visiting our web site at www.cchs-aa.com.  Your editorial contributions to the web site are welcomed, and will help us keep classmates updated about activities we are all interested in.  Our newsletter is scheduled to be published quarterly, and again, if you would like to contribute an article, send it to us.

Watch for activities coming up in 2011, especially the 25th anniversary celebration of the founding of CCAA.  Save the date - October 8, 2011.  Honorees will be announced in a future edition of the newsletter.  I also ask that when able, support the activities and athletic events of the Calvin Coolidge High School student body - they need us as role models and mentors.

Take care,

Marcus Brown, President, CCAA, Inc..

James, Frank, & Barrington

A  Note from our Co-Founders

It is time for the countdown! On October 8, 2011, the Calvin Coolidge Alumni Association (CCAAA) will celebrate its Silver Anniversary of 25 Years of Community Service. We are proud of our legacy and appreciate everyone who has been a part of building our community. I am amazed at how far we have come in 25 years. In 1986 the co-founders met frequently to develop a plan to create an alumni association that would bring together every class, give back to our alma mater and the community, provide community programs and scholarships and recognize the contributions of members. Our collective efforts, energy and spirit came together and CCAA was incorporated in 1987.

Our motto still stands today, "Upward Mobility Through Academics and Unity: A Winning Combination". As with most start-up organizations, our early years were difficult, and yet encouraging. Tickets for our first breakfast were $20 and we had over 100 people in attendance at Walter Reed. During the next two years our attendance increased to over 300 people; and by year five, we had over 400 people in attendance. While the attendance was encouraging, it was difficult to raise extra dollars to support the school with activities and other needed resources. After paying expenses and providing scholarships from donations we usually broke even.

We continued to "keep our eyes on the prize"; the mission of the CCAA. We focused on serving as mentors and conducting an annual career day for the students. We recruited more members, our board and officers provided great leadership and we expanded our partnerships with the Calvin Coolidge Parent Association and other community organizations and associations. We have been successful with grants to support school programs and community activities and supported the changing leadership at the school. Most recently, we engaged the community and friends in the Coolidge Campus Beautification Greenhouse/Garden Project !

WE have come a long way in 25 years and our members and volunteers continue to show their commitment to CCAA and Calvin Coolidge High School. Following our first breakfast, we provided a scholarship for $100. Over the past 25 years we have given $110,000 in scholarships to graduates. During the weekend of October 8, 2011 we plan to celebrate our past and strengthen our relationships for the future. Come and join us and continue to volunteer!

Coolidge Greenhouse Garden and Open Classroom Project
Comes to Life

To develop the next generation of planners, urban designers, and architects, NCPC staff members often contribute time and expertise to programs for students of all ages in the nation's capital. One such project that is nearing completion involves students, school administrators, and others who are committed to improving the Calvin Coolidge High School campus in Northwest Washington.

NCPC staff Elizabeth Miller and Sarah Moulton partnered with the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) Potomac Chapter to create outdoor rooms at Coolidge High for students to connect with the natural environment and provide healthy community green spaces. The campus is located at 6315 5th Street, NW. The project is also enabling NCPC staff to further one of the Six Big Ideas outlined in the agency's joint CapitalSpace Plan: Improving Public Schoolyards.

The Coolidge High project also caught the attention of the national American Society of Landscape Architects. The ASLA coordinates a service-oriented project in the host city of its annual conference, which was held this year in Washington from September 10-14. Through an established relationship between ASLA's Potomac Chapter and the Architecture Construction and Engineering (ACE) Mentoring Program, the Coolidge endeavor was chosen as this year's Legacy Project. The Legacy Project is a collaborative effort to provide outdoor environmental education opportunities, enhance school grounds, improve sustainability and aesthetic qualities, and provide an outdoor space that the students and community can be proud of.

The partnership with ASLA's Potomac Chapter will advance efforts that ACE, the high school, and the Calvin Coolidge Alumni Association (CCAA) previously began in order to renovate and reuse the school's greenhouse. The plans will transform the greenhouse, originally constructed in 1938, into a sustainable classroom for environmental education programs. To learn more about the project, view this video .

Work got underway in April 2010 during a community design day that saw the creation of an outdoor Coolidge High School Campus Master Plan and Greenhouse Garden. NCPC staff, along with ASLA Potomac Chapter volunteers, and more than 50 students, neighbors, teachers, and alumni worked together to envision a future campus that incorporates sustainable design elements and spaces that can better connect the campus with the surrounding neighborhood.

The master plan identifies short- and long-term projects the school and Alumni Association can use to guide implementation of an engaging and sustainable learning environment. Drawings prepared for the first phase include plans for a greenhouse garden and outdoor classroom. The DC Office of Public Education Facilities Management will install the infrastructure in September.

Friends of the Coolidge Garden

Maintaining a garden and growing our community

Friends of the Garden -

Spring is around the corner and green foliage soon will appear in Coolidge High School's new garden and outdoor classroom.  It will be so exciting to see spring green after our very cold winter.  The expansive garden with its rain garden, shrub beds, memorial garden and other unique features was installed last Fall by many dedicated alumni, neighbors, students and professionals from ASLA, ACE Mentoring, Casey Trees and others.   As in any garden, maintenance is the key to its survival.

The Coolidge High School Alumni is organizing the Friends of the Garden, a group dedicated to the maintenance of our new garden and outdoor classroom.   If you like to garden, we need your help.  If you don't know a weed from a perennial, this is your opportunity to learn how to garden and better know your neighbors and friends.   All supplies will be provided.  We just need your time.  Our partners, the Potomac Chapter, ASLA, landscape architects are putting together an extensive maintenance guide to  help the Frien  d s of the Garden provide the care that the garden will need.

If you wish to join the Friends of the Garden, please visit our "Friends of the Coolidge Garden" website page and complete the volunteer registration form b y  March 15, 2011.   You do not need to be alumni to join, neighbors and faculty are welcome.   A Spring Clean Up and Planting Day will be scheduled in late April.   Hope you will join us and help make Coolidge High School's new garden a big success.
