Zimmerman Receives Forest Health Aviation Safety Award
NEWTOWN SQUARE, PA--Dan Zimmerman, of the Northeastern Area State and Private Forestry headquarters staff in Newtown Square, PA, is this year's recipient of the Forest Health Aviation Safety Award. The award was established in 2010, in memory of the crew of N30266-Forest Service workers Rodney Whiteman and Dan Snider, and pilot Patrick Jessup. The award recognizes excellence in forest health aviation activities.

"Dan Zimmerman (right in photo) has promoted aviation safety consistently over a long period of time. His interest, skills, and experience have introduced guidance, direction, and organizational changes, contributing to a reduction in aviation incidents and resulting fatalities," said Dan's supervisor Mark Buccowich, assistant director of forest health and economics.

Durham, NH, Field Office Hosts Local Disabled Group
Durham, NH--More than 25 disabled adults and direct support staff members from a local community organization toured the Durham, NH, Field Office facility, May 7. The New Hampshire-based Living Innovations guests, who are very interested in trees, plants, and bugs, were treated to outdoor presentations about trees and invasive plants by expert staff members. Inside the facility, they learned about types of wood, toured five labs, and talked with presenters about their field work and research. At least a dozen Northeastern Area State and Private Forestry and Northern Research Station employees took part in the 45-minute-long public event. Living Innovations Community Living Coordinator Walter Wilcox later praised the Forest Service for its support for the local disabled community. He wrote "Thank you and your colleagues for all the effort you put in to our visit. I have gotten a bunch of positive feedback from folks and staff alike. We appreciate very much you taking time out of your busy day and for inviting us in to see all that you do." Living Innovations provides support for caregivers and people with disabilities from childhood to adulthood; in-home care; shared living options; and support at school, at work, and in the community.

Forest Service Announces
"My Neighborhood Forest"
Photo Contest

WASHINGTON--The U.S. Forest Service announced its "My Neighborhood Forest" photo contest, celebrating America's urban and community forests.
The Grand Prize winner will receive $200 in outdoor gear courtesy of the National Forest Foundation.
The contest, which runs through July 22, seeks to highlight the natural beauty that spring and summer bring to U.S. neighborhoods, communities and cities, as well as the crucial role of trees in the places we call home.

Ohio Leads in Tree Cities
COLUMBUS, OH-- Ohio remains the nation's leader in Tree City USA communities with 237 participating cities, villages and townships. This marks Ohio's 31st year as the top Tree City USA state, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources' (ODNR) Division of Forestry.
"Half of Ohioans live and work in a Tree City USA and enjoy a variety of benefits that come with having more trees, such as cleaner air and water, reduced stormwater runoff and increased property values," said Bob Boyles, state forester and chief of the ODNR Division of Forestry. "The Tree City USA program also helps communities deal with urban forestry challenges, such as the emerald ash borer." Read more.

Welcome Summer Student
Nuoshi Yang

ST. PAUL, MN--Nuoshi Yang has joined the Northeastern Area State and Private Forestry St. Paul staff for the summer, as part of the Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP). She is providing both field and administrative support to the St. Paul Field Office staffs and assisting Teri Heyer with the Urban Connections program. She will also spend some time with the Northern Research Station's Twin Cities area Forest Inventory and Analysis crew. Busy lady!
From Beijing, China, Nuoshi is an undergraduate senior studying Environmental Sciences, Policy and Management at the University of Minnesota. She came to Minnesota because she likes snow and cold places. That was before her first winter here in 2010. According to Nuoshi, she may have to rethink that! While in the United States, she has been to Austin, TX, Pittsburgh, PA, and Los Angeles and San Francisco, CA.
She characterizes herself as optimistic and likes to try new things. Her favorite dessert and first learned recipe is cheesecake! Nuoshi enjoys drawing, dancing, swimming, playing badminton, and being with friends.

WERC To Host Wood Workshops
PRINCETON, WV--The Northeastern Area State and Private Forestry's Wood Education and Resource Center (WERC) will host two workshops in the first half of June. Workshops are cosponsored by WERC, North Carolina State University - Wood Products Extension, and Woodshop News magazine.
Thursday, June 7, New Technologies for Value-Added Wood Products Manufacturers-Cabinets, Furniture, Millwork. This workshop is geared towards business owners and managers, key company personnel, and existing and startup businesses. Get workshop brochure.

Training Session in Conservation Easement Monitoring
DURHAM, NH-- The New York Division of Lands and Forests, and the Legacy Program of the Northeastern Area State and Private Forestry will host a 2-day training session for conservation easement monitors, foresters, and landowners. The meeting portion on June 6, 2012, can be accessed remotely, and the field portion on June 7 will be held in Albany, NY.
