WERC Rough Mill is Available for Leasing

WERC is now accepting applications for leasing its 42,000-square-foot rough mill and 10,000-square-foot wood shop. In-place machinery is optional for leasing. The facility is located ¼ mile off I-77 near Princeton, WV. Applications will be received through July 12, 2012. Contact Steve Milauskas at 304-487-1510. The prospectus will be placed on the WERC Web site as soon as it is available.

WERC Project Highlights

The Tennessee Forest Products Center at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN, recently completed a WERC-sponsored project titled A Life Cycle Inventory for Hardwood Fuel Pellets (Award Number 2009-DG-078). Project personnel completed a life cycle inventory of hardwood fuel pellets from the southeastern United States. Click here for project details and results. The Department of Sustainable Biomaterials at Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA, recently completed a WERC-sponsored project titled Development of a High Efficiency Steam and Vacuum Phytosanitation Treatment for Solid Wood Packaging Materials (Award Number 2010-DG-090). This project focused on using a unique steam and vacuum treatment as an alternative to using heat and fumigation to sanitize wood pallet and packaging materials. Profitable Operation of Small Sawmills Workshop with Hands-On Demonstrations

This workshop focuses on small sawmills and lumber drying operations that use gas engines, diesel engines, and single-phase electric power. Equipment vendors are invited to set up exhibits and offer demonstrations. Classroom lectures cover equipment currently available for small sawmill and lumber drying operations, how to saw for improving hardwood lumber grades, basics of the hardwood lumber grading system, lumber drying basics, heating a kiln with a stick wood water stove, profitable business and marketing strategies, and how to make value-added products beyond green and kiln-dried lumber.

Vacuum/Steam Treatment of Wood Pallets and Pallet Stringers Webcast

January 18, 2012 (Award Number 2010-DG-090) - This Webcast provides results and findings of a study funded at the Virginia Tech Department of Wood Science and Forest Products about using a vacuum/steam treatment process to sanitize wood packaging materials.

 

Life Cycle Inventory Tools for the Hardwood Industry

December 15, 2011 (Award Number 2010-DG-109) - This Webinar explained the Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) process and provided a template for wood product manufacturers to use to build life cycle inventories for their product lines. The Webinar provides a basic explanation and background of LCI based on examples from a solid strip hardwood flooring manufacturer in Wisconsin. The process of developing a LCI for hardwood flooring can be applied to other products in the wood industry.
