2012 WERC Competitive Grants Program

Based on the predicted budget, WERC will probably not have a competitive grants program in Federal Fiscal Year 2012. Check our Web site periodically.

WERC Project Highlight

The Southeast Michigan Resource Conservation & Development Council in Ann Arbor, MI, completed Ash Utilization Options: Supporting Biomass Energy Development and Wood Industry Training in Southeast Michigan (Award Number 2006-DG-268). This project demonstrated the generation of biomass energy using urban ash tree removals at Oakland University in Rochester, MI. Click here for the final report.

Woody Biomass Update

The WERC Wood Energy Technical Assistance Team recently worked with the manager of the J.C. Hamer sawmill in Curtin, WV, to improve the efficiency of the sawmill's wood-fired boiler. This boiler uses a "Dutch Oven" combustion system to provide steam for lumber conditioning and drying.  The boiler combustion efficiency increased from less than 60 percent to more than 80 percent with improvements in the boiler's air and fuel handling. This efficiency improvement will reduce both fuel usage and emissions.

The Missouri Fuels for Schools project, a joint effort between the Northeastern Area State and Private Forestry and the Missouri Department of Conservation, was completed. Six schools systems in the Ozark Region of Missouri now have wood-fired heating systems. Five use wood chips and one uses conventional firewood. All the systems meet EPA emissions requirements for heating systems in their size class and are more than 85 percent efficient in converting their wood fuel into useable heat energy.

Weeks Memorial Hospital in Lancaster, NH, has added a thermal storage unit to its wood chip-fired boiler system. This allows their boiler to operate more efficiently and reduces the amount of fuel oil used during spring and fall. This addition resulted from a joint effort between hospital staff, the New Hampshire State Forester's office, the North Country RC&D Council, and the WERC Technical Assistance Team. System operators at the Mt. Blue School District in Farmington, ME, and at the Oxford Hills School District in South Paris, ME, are also reporting improved wood boiler efficiency by using thermal storage systems.
