Fire Supervisors' Award Is Renamed H. Alan Zentz Award

NEWTOWN SQUARE,PA--New Hampshire State Forester Brad Simpkins was awarded the first annual H. Alan Zentz Northeast Forest Fire Supervisors' Award. The NFFS Award has been given annually to the person who has made significant contributions in the field of forest fire protection from the 20-state geographic area served by the Northeastern Area State and Private Forestry. This year the award was renamed the H. Alan Zentz Fire Supervisors' Award, to honor the life, work, and dedication of H. Alan Zentz, and his contributions to the forest fire protection during his 35-year career with the Maryland Forest Service and Forest Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture. Alan received the Northeast Forest Fire Supervisors' Award in 1999, and passed away in August 2010. Read more Back to Top |
October is National Neighborwoods Month
WASHINGTON, DC--Forest Service Chief Tidwell urges getting involved in national Neighborwoods Month-an annual celebration of trees in communities. Eighty percent of Americans live in metropolitan areas, which include 100 million acres of urban forest. Neighborwoods month provides the chance for people to learn about ecosystems where they live, to plant trees, to take tree tours and educational workshops, and to green-up their communities. Wildland Fire Education Conference

Minnesota Releases Wasp for Biocontrol of Emerald Ash Borer
MINNEAPOLIS, MN--Emerald ash borer (EAB) larvae, as their name describes, bore into ash trees and effectively starve them. Minnesota has 975 million ash trees, and the EAB could kill all of them. In Winona County, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture released three wasp species that bore into EAB larvae or eggs, killing them. Read more Back to Top |
Campfires and Root Fires
BOSTON, MA--"Root fires and Leave No Trace Campfire Building" was a recent headline on SectionHiker.com, following the discovery of a root fire on the Maine Appalachian Trail. Root fires can be started in a number of ways, including campfires. Fire can travel undetected along extensive root systems and surface in another location. Free Tours of Wood Structures at Forest Products Lab

MADISON, WI--The Forest Products Laboratory has constructed two full-scale structures for research and educational activities: the Research Demonstration House and the Carriage House. Both structures allow researchers to conduct housing-related studies in an applied setting, extending knowledge obtained in laboratory modeling environments.
