The wood products industry has at times found itself in a defensive position on "green" issues. Yet wood has the advantage of being a renewable resource that is environmentally friendly compared to competing materials. Moreover, there are many activities that wood products companies engage in, or could engage in, that are considered green. This workshop will focus on the unique opportunities that wood products companies have to capitalize on the green consciousness at work in the marketplace while reducing costs and increasing market access.
Sustainable Forest Futures, located in Concord, NH, is hosting the workshops in cooperation with various trade associations in the New England area, including the Vermont Wood Manufacturers Association, Wood Products Manufacturers Association, Maine Wood Products Association, New Hampshire Timberland Owners Association, and the Empire State Forest Products Association. The Wood Education and Resource Center is providing partial funding through a grant (Award Number 2010-DG-077).

Webinar: Factors to Consider When Establishing a Community Wood
Reclamation System
Thursday, September 22, 2011
2:00 p.m. Central / 3:00 p.m. Eastern
The Feasibility Study for a Community Wood Reclamation System (WERC Award Number 2010-DG-107) identified potential [woody biomass] supply and markets, reviewed operational logistics and organizational options, and created financial projections for a multi-municipality urban tree reclamation system.
Specifically, the study looked at establishing a pilot wood reclamation center at Robbins Community Power (RCP), a start-up biomass energy plant in Robbins, IL, as the first phase in a comprehensive reclamation system with satellite locations. The Community Wood Reclamation System, nicknamed Robbinswood, would source wood chips for RCP's biomass energy needs, but also divert higher-quality logs for higher uses, thus assuring landowners that their trees will realize their highest possible use.
The Illinois Emerald Ash Borer Wood Utilization Team and Industry Advisory Council oversaw the study, which was conducted by the Purdue University Department of Forestry and Natural Resources; Timber Steward, LLC, a timber marketing and wood utilization specialist; and the marketing consulting firm Work In Motion. This Webinar on the study's findings is geared toward helping other communities considering the development of a community wood reclamation system.
