WERC Project Highlights

The Southeast MI Resource Conservation and Development Council located in Ann Arbor, MI, recently completed a WERC-funded project (Award Number 2009-DG-085) titled Marketing Urban Wood through Certification and Branding. The project focused on understanding the obstacles and opportunities affecting the marketing of urban wood products by conducting a series of working roundtable meetings. The goal of these meetings was to develop appropriate strategies for certification and/or branding that would promote urban wood products and provide incentives for using urban wood in the green building and green product markets. Project details and findings are included in the final accomplishment report. For additional information, contact Jessica Simons at 517-851-2372.

Dovetail Partners, Inc., located in Minneapolis, MN, recently completed a WERC-funded project (Award Number 10-DG-110) titled Carbon Storage Factors for Urban Hardwood Forest Products. The project developed specific carbon storage factors for urban hardwood products including landscape mulch, biomass for fuel, and solid wood products.  Project results are included in the report Carbon and Carbon Dioxide Equivalent Sequestration in Urban Forest Products.  A Webinar about the project was conducted on June 3, 2011, and can be viewed here. For additional information, contact Steve Bratkovich at 612-333-0430.

The West Virginia University Division of Forestry and Natural Resources, located in Morgantown, WV, recently completed a WERC-funded project (Award Number 2006-DG-185) titled Promoting the Economic Competitiveness of Central Appalachian Hardwood Industries through Collaborative Information Transfer and Extension Service. The project focused on enhancing the economic competitiveness of the hardwood industry by collecting information on Chinese hardwood importers and Appalachian hardwood producers/exporters, conducting exchange visits and industry tours, and developing a Web-based resource kit.  Project details are included in the final accomplishment report.  The Web-based resource kit can be accessed here. For additional information, contact Jinxing Wang at 304-293-7601.     Back to Top

Update on Biomass Thermal Energy Council's (BTEC) WERC Project Activity

On August 11, 2011, BTEC announced the availability of an array of educational materials funded in part by a grant from the U.S. Forest Service's Wood Education and Resource Center. Over the last 12 months, BTEC produced a series of 7 Webinars, 5 factsheets, 10 podcasts, and a comprehensive slideshow presentation on key issues impacting the biomass thermal industry. Descriptions and links to these resources are available below.

All materials are publically available free of charge on the BTEC Web site.

"The WERC grant helped produce a suite of valuable educational materials, educating thousands of people on the opportunities of biomass heating and combined heating and power," said BTEC's acting Executive Director Joseph Seymour. "We are grateful to WERC for supporting our efforts, and we look forward to engaging more partners during the next phase of our successful Webinar series."

Workshops: Enhancing Economic Competitiveness through Going Green

Augusta, ME ..................Tuesday, September 27, 2011

Concord, NH ..............Wednesday, September 28, 2011

Randolph Center, VT.............Tuesday, October 4, 2011

Glens Falls, NY.................Wednesday, October 5, 2011

Utica, NY...........................Thursday, October 6, 2011

The wood products industry has at times found itself in a defensive position on "green" issues. Yet wood has the advantage of being a renewable resource that is environmentally friendly compared to competing materials. Moreover, there are many activities that wood products companies engage in, or could engage in, that are considered green. This workshop will focus on the unique opportunities that wood products companies have to capitalize on the green consciousness at work in the marketplace while reducing costs and increasing market access.

Sustainable Forest Futures, located in Concord, NH, is hosting the workshops in cooperation with various trade associations in the New England area, including the Vermont Wood Manufacturers Association, Wood Products Manufacturers Association, Maine Wood Products Association, New Hampshire Timberland Owners Association, and the Empire State Forest Products Association. The Wood Education and Resource Center is providing partial funding through a grant (Award Number 2010-DG-077).

Workshop: Lake States Cable Logging Demonstration

Thursday, September 8, 2011

Location: About 3 miles west of

Middle Inlet, WI

This workshop will provide an overview of a unique cable system that can be utilized in a variety of landscape scenarios (steep slopes, ravines, wetlands, and islands, among others). This system can be potentially profitable in situations that involve removing lower wood volumes than required by traditional cable yarding systems. For more information click here or call 920-465-3006.

Sponsors include River Country RC&D; Glacierland RC&D; Pomery Forest Products; Renewable Resource Solutions, LLC; and WERC.

Webinar: Factors to Consider When Establishing a Community Wood

Reclamation System

      Thursday, September 22, 2011

2:00 p.m. Central / 3:00 p.m. Eastern

The Feasibility Study for a Community Wood Reclamation System (WERC Award Number 2010-DG-107) identified potential [woody biomass] supply and markets, reviewed operational logistics and organizational options, and created financial projections for a multi-municipality urban tree reclamation system.

Specifically, the study looked at establishing a pilot wood reclamation center at Robbins Community Power (RCP), a start-up biomass energy plant in Robbins, IL, as the first phase in a comprehensive reclamation system with satellite locations. The Community Wood Reclamation System, nicknamed Robbinswood, would source wood chips for RCP's biomass energy needs, but also divert higher-quality logs for higher uses, thus assuring landowners that their trees will realize their highest possible use.

The Illinois Emerald Ash Borer Wood Utilization Team and Industry Advisory Council oversaw the study, which was conducted by the Purdue University Department of Forestry and Natural Resources; Timber Steward, LLC, a timber marketing and wood utilization specialist; and the marketing consulting firm Work In Motion. This Webinar on the study's findings is geared toward helping other communities considering the development of a community wood reclamation system. Easy, Accessible Hardwood Trade Data

Statistics on hardwood imports and exports are available free from Federal government Web sites (US International Trade Commission, USDA Foreign Agricultural Service). However, the Web interfaces can be cumbersome, and interpretation of the data requires rather extensive knowledge of the Harmonized Tariff Schedule (imports) and Schedule B codes (exports). For example, engineered flooring is imported under 14 different HTS codes, and solid flooring has 9 codes of its own.

Hardwood Publishing Company, publishers of the Weekly Hardwood Review, the Hardwood Review Global, and the Hardwood Leader, makes all of the hardwood import and export data available in an easy-to-use, online graphical format...corrected for errors...and free for all subscribers. For the first time, U.S. hardwood trade data is easy and practical to utilize for hardwood product trend analysis.

At www.HardwoodReview.com, exports of hardwood lumber and logs can be viewed by country or by species. Data tables show current-month and year-to-date volumes and values in the user's choice of metric or English units. View total exports to a country, global exports of a species, or specific species-country combinations. A simple click on any of the items or item-country combinations pulls up a 3-year graph of month-to-month shipments...the easiest way to visualize trends in international trade. Likewise, users can research and view import volumes and values for hardwood lumber, moulding, and both solid and engineered flooring (including bamboo).

With 40 percent of grade lumber destined for export markets and more than 50 percent of many U.S. consumer wood products originating overseas, global trade trends directly impact every U.S. hardwood company, even those that do not directly import or export anything. Now there's an easy way to identify, manage, and potentially profit from those trends at www.HardwoodReview.com.                     Back to Top
