Chief Tidwell Announces New Director
WASHINGTON, D.C.-Tony Ferguson will become Director of the Northeastern Area State and Private Forestry, effective August 14. Ferguson is Director of Minerals and Geology Management for the National Forest System, in Washington, DC, and previously was Assistant Director. His Forest Service experience also includes details as Acting Director of Lands and Realty, and Deputy Regional Forester for the Alaska Region.  For more than 21 years he worked for the Bureau of Land Management in Washington, DC, and different parts of the country. Positions included Chief of Staff for the Assistant Secretary of Interior for Land and Minerals, and Staff Assistant to the Assistant Secretary. He has bachelor's and master's degrees in geology from the University of Tennessee.
NA S&PF allocates $14 million to implementation of State Strategies
NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pa.-The intent of the Fiscal Year 2011 Request for Proposals (RFP) by the Northeastern Area State and Private Forestry (NA S&PF) was to competitively allocate Federal funding to issues and priority landscapes identified in the Statewide Forest Resource Strategies, as well as in other national and regional strategies. Using the direction provided in the 2008 Farm Bill, NA S&PF developed the 2011 RFP to improve program integration and reduce duplicative application and review procedures. NA S&PF received 217 proposals requesting $41.8 million-far more funds than were available. Of those proposals, 22 projects totaling $5.6 million were submitted to the Washington Office as Redesign projects of national importance. An additional 57 projects met the Congressional intent and accomplishment metrics of Forest Health and National Fire Plan Hazard Mitigation, allocating the remaining $8.4 million.  READ MORE.
New Web site provides access to the state of forests nationwide
WASHINGTON, D.C.-The National Association of State Foresters has launched a Web site that gives access to State Forest Action Plans, formerly called Statewide Forest and Resource Assessments and Strategies.  These documents identify priority forest areas where the need for management and conservation is greatest.  READ MORE

American Recovery and Reinvestment Act replanting Worcester, Mass
DURHAM, N.H.-More than 30,000 host trees in and near Worcester, Mass, have been cut down and disposed of since the discovery of Asian longhorned beetle there in 2008. Just a few weeks are left in this planting season, and the interim target for replanting the city is closing in.

"The goal is to have an additional 5,000 (trees) in the ground by July," said Shannon Williams, a Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) forester who manages Recovery Act-hired planting crews.  READ MORE

West Virginia University hosts Mid-Atlantic Wildfire Training Academy

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.-Firefighters from Eastern States learned skills they can use in their home States and in larger fires out West, in training held at West Virginia University. Twenty of the 35 trainees hope to travel to fight western blazes, which require firefighting in a different way than for fires on the east coast.  READ MORE.

Biomass system cuts School District costs by $115,000
LAPORTE, Pa.-A new heating and hot water system for the Sullivan County, PA, School District will use woody biomass from local sources to reduce the amount of fuel oil used. The project is part of the PA Fuels for Schools and Beyond program, which receives some of its financial support from the Northeastern Area State and Private Forestry.  READ MORE
