Welcome to the May issue of
Run Your Own Race - the monthly newsletter from Grove Hill Coaching.

Hasn't the weather been fantastic? It may not always be so sunny in England but it is lovely to see so many people smiling when they are out and about in good weather. Opportunity to make the most of what we have when we are lucky enough to have it perhaps?

This month's Run Your Own Race
is packed with info on the next in my series of motivational workshops, as well as tips, articles and ideas to take you forward to be what you want to be. If you have any suggestions for future articles or would like to contribute, get in touch.

How To Be More Optimistic In A Seemingly Cynical World

Last month, I popped out to watch the runners in the London Marathon and as well as it being a beautifully sunny day, I was struck by how supportive everybody was being. Living in the city can take it out of you after a while with cynicism and lethargy often taking over.

However the day of the marathon was like a completely different world. People were cheering on complete strangers for no other reason than to be supportive and encourage people to keep going.

It was inspiring to know that in a place where I would normally have to jostle with the commuting masses for a bus or get the tube, here were people cheering and being as positive, selfless and enthusiastic as possible for the benefit of other people. It was like seeing a friend, lover or family member in a completely different and positive light.

And we have also just had the royal wedding too. I am not a royalist by any stretch of the imagination, yet again in a world where it is far too easy to focus on being negative about what is going wrong, here we have an opportunity to celebrate something positive.

Whatever your opinions on the wedding, everybody wins if we embrace the situation. We even got a day off to do what we wanted to do. What did you do with that day?

So like seeing a friend, lover, family member or even a city in a completely different and positive light, it may at times be difficult, but if you look hard enough and sometimes it may feel like you are looking harder than you've ever looked, however it is there.

Give Yourself Unto The Moment

James Dean once said 'Dream as if you'll live forever. Live as if you'll die today.' Perhaps that is a tad melodramatic and romantic in its extremity, however the essential point is very real.

Think for a moment if one day you woke up and overnight, a miracle had taken place that would have given you all the time you wanted, what would you choose to do with it? How much time would you really need? Two hours? Three weeks? Six months? Ten years? And if you had that time, what would you do with it? Climb Mount Everest, travel the world or simply spend more time reading books?

Do you really need that time or is there something you could be doing now, this very moment, to move you forward to where you want to be in your life? Is it a fact that you need more time or is it your perception? It is perhaps a sad, yet understandable truth that people sometimes wait for a moment of tragedy before they are spurred into action to do something they have always dreamed of doing. What makes us wait until a moment of tragedy happens to feel like we need to truly live our lives? What is holding us back from living now? If it's important enough to do when a life-changing situation comes to pass such as somebody being taken seriously ill, divorce or losing a business, is it not as important now?

If someone were to ask you when the best time of your life was, when would you say? Last month, last year or five years ago perhaps? Would you consider saying now? Would you be able to say now? And if you couldn't say now, what could you do to make now the best time of your life?
