MM&I Header

August 13, 2012 -  How do you deal with and cope with conflict? Do you retreat, retaliate or resolve to get answers? When you retreat, wishing it will resolve itself or simply go away, it is still nagging at you and distracting you away from what you desire to be doing. The same holds true when you retaliate, only it consumes you and becomes your focus over what you desire to be doing. Oftentimes, conflict is a misperception because we don't have enough answers and therefore, are making assumptions or believing something to be a certain way based on our personal frame of reference. Whenever a conflict arises, your first and best reaction is to get more answers. By gaining understanding based on facts or considering all sides of the situation, you may discover some interesting things about yourself as well as realize the conflict is not as much of an issue or obstacle as you originally thought.

Take an MM&I Moment to take a fresh look at the current conflict you are experiencing. What questions do you have and where can you get more answers? Are you making assumptions or responding based on real facts? Are you allowing it to personally affect you, and if so, why and is it really personally directed at you? Getting answers and gaining understanding will help you be more open and able to find a resolution. It is also a more positive, productive way to approach any conflict in your work or life. The journey  through getting past any conflict begins with you, and how you take that first step. Make it an empowering one and there is no conflict that can truly stop you.

Synergized Quote of the Week

"Difficulties are meant to arouse, not discourage.  The human spirit is to grow stronger by conflict." - William Ellery Channing
