MM&I Header

July 2, 2012 -  How are you claiming or reclaiming your independence in a way that serves you and others better?  How are you nurturing and encouraging independence in others?  We can be our own worst enemies in tying ourselves down doing things we really don't want to be doing that someone else would be thrilled to be doing. This is especially important to be aware of if you are being counted on to do what you do best and are being pulled away from this to "handle other things." Part of helping others to be more independent in support of your efforts could be as simple as: taking the time to train them, or documenting a process, or helping them understand how to do something and why it is important. Part of giving yourself more independence is to assess what you really need to be doing versus what you feel you should be doing.

Take an MM&I Moment this Independence Day week to list what could help you become more independent in your work or life. What resources do you need? What abilities do you need? What could you let go of? What really isn't necessary? What could or should you hand off to someone else? What do you need to teach someone? What could you document into a procedure or systemize so you are no longer the only one doing this activity? Choose a couple of steps you could take to reclaim or gain more independence and take action. Feeling a sense of freedom to focus more on what you love and enjoy doing is within your grasp. So make it happen starting now.

Synergized Quote of the Week

"Independence is best used in accordance with helping others.  We are all dependent on one another, every soul of us on earth." - George Bernard Shaw

Savvy Secret Tip of the Week

Do you have a "field of dreams" mentality? In our CRISP Study, 66% of stagnant, negative-growth companies claimed they had developed a distinctive brand and positioning as a part of their marketing plan. Upon further investigation, we found two very striking reasons why these distinctions did not make the difference.  The first reason that was evident was that the companies invested time and money into the branding and positioning, but then no consistent effort was made to get their name and brand out into their targeted marketplace. They literally had a Field of Dreams mentality of "if we build it, they will come." The second discovery was that based on the fact that these companies did not know the psychographic profile of their ideal target markets and did not know the best value offense of their competitors, it was likely that their branding actually was not distinguishing or appealing to their ideal markets. WHAT IS THE VALUE OF MENTORING?
A recently released Harvard Business Review report cited that for a person in the workforce, "No mentoring could mean no promotion."  Being a mentor has as much value as being mentored. I had the privilege of being a mentor through the Women Executives WINGS Scholarship program of a recent UNC-Charlotte graduate, Cherish Norman, who confirmed that we are all in excellent hands for future leaders in business. CLICK HERE to read the article in the Charlotte Observer.  Cherish isn't wasting any time, launching into her graduate degree this summer literally a couple of weeks after graduating with her honors undergraduate degree.
