Do you have a "field of dreams" mentality? In our CRISP Study, 66% of stagnant, negative-growth companies claimed they had developed a distinctive brand and positioning as a part of their marketing plan. Upon further investigation, we found two very striking reasons why these distinctions did not make the difference. The first reason that was evident was that the companies invested time and money into the branding and positioning, but then no consistent effort was made to get their name and brand out into their targeted marketplace. They literally had a Field of Dreams mentality of "if we build it, they will come." The second discovery was that based on the fact that these companies did not know the psychographic profile of their ideal target markets and did not know the best value offense of their competitors, it was likely that their branding actually was not distinguishing or appealing to their ideal markets.
