In 2009, "Super Chevy" magazine asked Arthur R. Sypek's Automotive Collision Repair Technology teacher, Bob Gonier, if his students could bring the legendary "Huntress," a former 1971 Camaro drag-racing car, "Back to the Streets." Since then, with the assistance of Arthur R. Sypek's Automotive Technology teacher, Mike Cramer, and his students, the Project BTTS car was disassembled and worked through a total transformation. The body was stripped, there is a new suspension fore and aft, shocks, brakes, overdrive transmission, carburetor, heads and engine - all parts donated by "Super Chevy." After months of tedious bodywork and getting the bodylines straight and ready for color, the students applied sealer, "Jazzy Blue" paint and then clearcoat.
This project gave the students real-world, practical experience from basic skills to the fine detail of how to lay stripes - preparing the students for a career in the exciting field of collision repair. The conversion of the Camaro will be showcased not only in the students' work portfolios for employment interviews, but also at "Super Chevy's" Tampa, Florida headquarters. |

Though only in its second year, MCTS Health Science Academy is already proving to be an atmosphere conducive to student learning, achievement and leadership. Perhaps the most shining example of this is the success of the Academy's Health Occupations Students of America (H.O.S.A.) Public Service Announcement team. After placing 2nd at the NJ State Leadership Conference last year, the PSA team qualified to attend the National Leadership Conference in Anaheim, California. The team created a video and presentation relating to the year's PSA prompt, "Get a Healthy Dose of Sunshine." The PSA performance was assessed on content, purpose, relevance, writing, originality, visual imagery and talent. In addition, students were required to meet a series of technical guidelines, including audio quality, focus and exposure, composition, camera technique, and editing. The team competed against 51 other teams from across the country, eventually coming in 10th place. |
