Saint Clement Awarded for Stewardship Commitment

Saint Clement's long-time commitment to stewardship was recognized by the International Catholic Stewardship Council (ICSC) at the plenary session of its annual conference last week in Chicago. Saint Clement was awarded an Honorable Mention as runner-up for the prestigious Archbishop Thomas J. Murphy Memorial Parish Stewardship Award recognizing outstanding work in Christian stewardship formation at the parish level. After reviewing the many different stewardship initiatives undertaken by Saint Clement in recent years, the ICSC observed that "[i]t is obvious that Stewardship permeates all areas of your parish life."
The award was gratefully accepted by Fr. Ken Simpson and several members of the Stewardship Council and the Engagement Committee, including Tom McCarthy, Judy LeDuc, Carol Fowler, and Marnie McHale. This recognition acknowledges the hard work and dedication of our parish staff, especially Mary Cele Doyle, and numerous parishioners who have made the commitment to give substance to our parish stewardship theme of Pray, Serve, Give. The application Saint Clement submitted to the ICSC in connection with this award highlighted the many different aspects of stewardship at the parish, including our Sunday Giving Commitment, Clement Commits, Prayer Day, and Service Day. The ICSC noted that "[t]he application . . . told a clear and compelling story about how your leadership has guided your parish toward growing Stewardship as a way of life." Saint Clement's application can be found here.

The ICSC annual conference is the occasion for more than 1,500 clergy and laity from around the world to meet and share ideas about how to grow Christian stewardship at the parish and diocesan level. Saint Clement was honored to sponsor a booth at this year's ICSC parish fair to display the many materials we have developed in recent years in video, graphic, and written format to spread the message of stewardship around the parish. In addition, parishioners and staff who hosted the booth spoke with leaders of many different parishes around the country and the world to exchange ideas and insights about stewardship. The Stewardship Council and the Engagement Committee look forward to bringing many of those ideas to life at Saint Clement in the months and years ahead.

Saint Clement School Uniforms Worn Around the World
As Saint Clement School students start the year with new uniforms, so will those of our sister school in El Salvador, thanks to the efforts of the parents, teachers, and students here at 2524 North Orchard Street. Our sister school received Saint Clement's gently used uniforms just a couple weeks ago, a shipment that included enough to outfit the school's 150 children. |
Saint Clement student Anthony Saliba and his mother Moira prepare the crates for shipping.
|
The effort started in May, with the entire school community donating their old uniforms. With the help of many 8th graders, including Anthony Saliba, Brendan Flynn, Kate Perry, Ellie and Grace Cullen, and Brian Tait; and parents Heather Kracik, Lori Howard, and Lisa Friedlander, the uniforms were sorted. Then the group had to categorize, count, and weigh the clothing. More than 1,475 pieces of clothing were collected that, in total, weighed 660 pounds. The Rux family also collected another 91 pounds -- 132 items -- from Saint Scholastica School. With 751 pounds of clothing to send, the task of getting it there was the biggest challenge. A summer lemonade stand helped to raise $351 and the rest of the shipping fees were donated by Saint Clement families. School teachers Mrs. Eslinger, Ms. Pinz, and Mr. Roe all helped haul the 751 pounds of clothes from the cafeteria to the garage where the clothes were packed in two large (16 square foot) shipping crates. In addition, School Principal Melissa Dan, Assistant Principal Fran Kucich, and school secretary Carol Bibat helped with the information that was needed to fill out forms for exportation. This paperwork not only needed to be in English, but also translated to Spanish. The El Salvador Consul General of Chicago, Patricia Mazza Pittsford, graciously had her daughter translate the forms on our behalf. She also provided a document that allowed taxes to be waived in El Salvador. By the end of August, the crates were shipped and received. As you can see, this was an effort that could not have been done alone. Thanks to all of those who donated uniforms and helped with this momentous project. The children at our sister school now have uniforms to wear to school, creating an atmosphere conducive to learning and spreading the word of God. It is rewarding to know that there are fellow students, thousands of miles away, wearing Saint Clement uniforms with as much pride as our Saint Clement students do. |
Recent College Grads Warmly Welcomed Here
On September 23, the Saint Clement Young Adult Community (YAC) welcomed recent college graduates for dinner and conversation before the 7 p.m. Mass. Approximately 50 people from various universities joined us; many were not originally from Chicago and enjoyed the opportunity to meet other people their age who were also new to the area. Fr. Ken Simpson led a discussion about the transition from college to the "real world." The participants broke off into small groups to share their experiences since graduating, and what they have found helpful thus far in their time of transition. Pastoral Associate and Director of Evangelization Christina Bax shared information on ways to become involved in our parish. We look forward to seeing these new faces in our community. We also hope to make the "recent grad night" an annual event, so keep an eye out in the future! If you're in your 20's or 30's, don't miss your next chance to meet new people and learn more about our vibrant Young Adult Community at Saint Clement Parish. Join us for our YAC Fall Kick-off on Friday, October 5 at 7 p.m.! |

Did You Know?
Pre Cana Program Offers Opportunity for Engaged Couples to Reflect, Share
Are you married and looking to get involved in a parish ministry? For the past 20 years, Saint Clement has offered a Pre Cana program to guide engaged couples through their spiritual journey into marriage. Saint Clement's Pre Cana program is a great opportunity to mentor newly engaged couples in our community. This in-house program offers couples an intimate setting to discuss and reflect about their relationship, and prepare for marriage in the Catholic Church. Here are some testimonials from both Pre Cana host couples and an engaged -- now married -- couple who attended the Pre Cana sessions:
"It was 1988. We'd been members of Saint Clement Parish for about 12 years, and had loved every moment of Parish life. Our daughters were both attending Saint Clement School, and we had been involved in Clement Couples for a while when we were asked if we would like to participate in a new ministry that was starting in the Parish, Pre Cana.It seemed that the Parish had decided that lay married couples should be taking on a leading role in helping to prepare people planning to be married in the Church for their lives together as married couples. Our job would be not so much to teach, but to simply offer examples from our own marriage that might encourage these starry-eyed engaged couples to talk about issues like money, sex, and children, that were sure to arise once they were married.
Of course we said, 'Yes,' and it has been an extremely rewarding experience for us ever since. At first, there were relatively few couples involved in the Pre Cana ministry, so we would often invite couples into our home for the four-session program twice or three times a year. And yes, we are still involved, although not quite as frequently as we once were. We've found that, as Pre Cana hosts, we learn as much about the meaning of marriage as those engaged couples who attend the sessions. That's what keeps us coming back again and again to volunteer to host at least one program a year.
Our hair is a bit greyer now than it was in 1988, but we're still as enthusiastic about the Pre Cana program as we were when we started. These young, engaged couples really inspire us with the potential that married life has to offer for their personal growth and spiritual fulfillment. We'll keep on with this ministry forever!"
-- Steve and Nicole VanderVoort
"Pre Cana is the best wedding gift a couple can get. It's the gift that keeps on giving! As long time facilitators of the program, we believe in the positive impact of the ministry and the lasting effect those four evening discussions can have on the long term success of a marriage. The opportunity to focus on marital communication in its many forms and candidly discuss potential tension points in a safe environment with the help of other engaged couples and two married couple facilitators is truly valuable."
-- Cynthia and Jim Patti
"Joe and I had a wonderful experience with the Pre Cana process. Going into it, Joe was not looking forward to it in the beginning because he didn't know what to expect and he doesn't really like talking openly about personal issues with people he doesn't know. I understood his position, but told him we had to give it a shot, and just go with it. After our first meeting, Joe and I couldn't wait to come back the following Sunday! It had to do with the mentors that were assigned to us. Paula, Larry, Tenney, and Charlie made us feel very welcome and just made the whole experience worthwhile. We felt very comfortable being open with the other couples (who were also very great!) and most importantly just being ourselves. We definitely learned a lot about our relationship and how important it is to have communication and being a great counterpoint for your partner."
-- Joe and Samantha Bruno
The program commitment is four week night sessions, two hours per session. If you are interested in becoming a Pre Cana host couple, please contact Paula Quinn.
