Raise the Roof!
Saint Clement School parents enjoyed their own "recess" on the school's rooftop last Thursday night at an event designed to generate funds to build a new playground. More than 240 parents attended "Raise the Roof" on top of the now-nine-year old school addition at the south end of the school campus.
While the space was transformed for an evening of entertainment, including twinkle lights, "grass," and some modern outdoor furniture, the rooftop typically has only a simple padded flooring, some protective netting to keep too many balls from bouncing out onto Orchard Street, and that's it. Children use the space for recess and perhaps a game of kickball or tag for the younger grades, but no playground equipment is currently available.
Principal Melissa Dan explained the importance of physical play for children of all ages, stating, "Research has shown us time and time again that learning occurs outdoors in ways not possible inside the regular classroom. An increasing body of research continues to indicate the benefits of unstructured play -- and specifically outdoor play -- for elementary school children. As indicated in current brain research, if students are given the chance to move around and be active, be outdoors, be free -- they return to the classroom more attentive and able to concentrate on the academic tasks at hand. This translates into better academic performance!"
Fr. Ken Simpson announced at the event that a parishioner's bequest totaling $200,000 was received by the school to kick-off the fundraising efforts. Additionally, another donor agreed to match up to $75,000 of pledges made that night. Those two generous contributions made it much easier to inch closer to the goal by collecting donations and pledges totaling $430,000 in just a few short hours. Most importantly, the generosity and dedication of Saint Clement parents and parishioners will go beyond just the boundaries of 2524 North Orchard Street as two percent of the Raise the Roof proceeds will benefit our sister school in El Salvador.
With a goal of $500,000, contributions and pledges are still being collected to help create the new space. A brochure detailing the work to be done, sponsorship recognition levels, and reasons to contribute to Raise the Roof is available here. You can complete the pledge card with your contribution amount and mail it to Saint Clement School, Raise the Roof Campaign, 2524 North Orchard Street, Chicago IL 60614.

Farewell Celebration for Mary Cele Doyle
On the bright, sunny morning of September 9, our community came together to celebrate Mary Cele Doyle and the service she has so graciously given to our parish. For more than eight years, Mary Cele has served on the parish staff as Director of Community Involvement and most recently as Coordinator of Parish Engagement. These were her titles, but we all knew her as our wisdom figure and heart of hospitality. Mary Cele's husband Jim recently accepted a position at All Hallows College in Ireland, assisting
the school's president, Fr. Pat McDevitt. The Irish- and Chicago-themed reception featured mini corned beef & cabbage (an Irish favorite), along with mini cinnamon rolls from Ann Sather (a Chicago favorite) and cake. Parishioners had the opportunity to relay their thanks and best wishes to Mary Cele in writing, and take part in a drawing to see who could visit the Doyles first in Dublin!
Pictures of Mary Cele with various parishioners were scattered about the reception, giving testament to the great service Mary Cele has shown us over the years. We are incredibly grateful for the many gifts Mary Cele has shared with our parish! |

Catholicism 101 Series Now Open to All Adults
This fall Saint Clement will offer a Catholicism 101 series for adults looking to brush up on their knowledge of the faith and how it plays out in their lives. Although this is the first time this course is open to all adult members of the parish, it is not the first time we've run it!
Over the past several years, Saint Clement has offered preparation classes in the fall for adults in need of the Sacrament of Confirmation. However, our pastoral staff discovered that many of the participants in this prep class hadn't participated in religious formation in quite some time. In addition to preparing for the sacrament, the groups seemed to need an overall "refresher" in the faith. So we went back to the basics and added sessions on the Bible, the nuts and bolts of prayer, the Mass, and more! Many of the candidates really appreciated the chance to re-learn or dig deeper into the tradition now as adults.
This year we have scheduled the classes again, but decided to open them to any adult in the parish who is interested in participating. If you think you would benefit from this program please join us. The course will run for nine weeks, with the sessions being held on Tuesdays from 7:00-9:00 p.m., starting September 18.
Registration is required and can be found here. There is a $20 fee to cover the cost of materials. Please contact Christina Bax with questions.
