Saint Clement Parishioners Participate in

Big Shoulders Fund's "Give Back Day"

On Saturday, July 28, a group of Saint Clement parishioners traveled to Hyde Park to take part in a Give Back Day, sponsored by the Big Shoulders Fund and its Auxiliary Board. The team of eight was made up of different demographics of the parish, and joined a larger group of 150 volunteers from other parishes, schools, and organizations. The group spent the hot summer morning working at St. Thomas the Apostle School near 55th and South Woodlawn, a 120+ year old elementary school housed in a beautiful, historic building. While in a more well-to-do neighborhood, the school serves children from several low-income neighborhoods around the city, and has struggled with enrollment over the years. The team spent three hours doing various tasks around the school--cleaning walls, organizing, and getting classrooms ready for the coming school year.

  Saint Clement Volunteers

What was special about this event was that volunteers were able to work alongside those from St. Thomas the Apostle who were very devoted to the parish. Their parishioners were committed to doing their part to improve the school, working side by side with all the groups from Big Shoulders. The principal and a whole team of teachers cleaned and organized with us, and were a visible presence the entire morning. Words of encouragement and thanks were plentiful. While not always glamorous, the tasks completed were necessary and gave the teachers and principal the ability to put their focus elsewhere. A family of three--mother, father, and 8th grade daughter--worked next to some of our volunteers, scrubbing down walls. The family had been parishioners for many, many years; their oldest children, two sons, were currently in college but had attended elementary school at St. Thomas the Apostle. Their dedication, care and pride for the school was incredibly apparent. Furthermore, throughout the morning we met countless St. Thomas parishioners whose love for the parish was evident and deeply rooted in their lives. What a wonderful example of stewardship they shared with us. Thanks to all from Saint Clement who assisted with the Give Back Day! We appreciate your outreach in Christ's name.

The mission of the Big Shoulders Fund is to provide support to Catholic schools in the neediest areas of inner-city Chicago. Currently, they serve nearly 24,000 students in 93 inner-city schools. Eighty percent of students are ethnic minorities, 32 percent are not Catholic, and 62 percent live in poverty. Since 1986, Big Shoulders has raised over $210 million to fund scholarships, operating grants, facility improvements, instructional equipment and special education programs. The impact of these investments is remarkable; 97 percent of students attending Big Shoulders schools graduate from high school and 87 percent matriculate to college. Big Shoulders Fund is unique in that administrative expenses are supported by an endowment and other income which ensures all funds currently raised go toward programs that benefit the Big Shoulders Fund schools and the students they serve. Stories of Stewards

As part of our ongoing engagement process, we have come to realize the importance of parishioners sharing their personal stories of how they have connected with Saint Clement as an important factor in their lives. As a feature twice a month, we share the stories and reflections of our engaged parishioners who are living a stewardship life of prayer, service, and giving. This week we hear from Michelle Lammers.

Michelle Lammers "When I first stepped foot into Saint Clement one Easter Sunday, I had no idea how much of an impact this parish would one day have on my life. Although I began attending Mass here on a weekly basis five years ago, I did not become involved until 2009 when I joined the Young Adult Board.  At that point in life, I was actively seeking 'something.' Looking back, this 'something' was a yearning for deeper friendships with people of faith, a stronger awareness of God in my everyday life, and a desire to serve others.

I found this and much more in my involvement on the Board, in which I co-developed a monthly volunteer opportunity and annual service retreat at Mission of Our Lady of the Angels, as well as leading the young adult winter retreat the last three years. I've been so inspired on our retreats, watching young adults proactively seek to develop their faith lives and improve their relationships with God.

For me, being a steward means developing opportunities for others to grow in their faith and in their desire to be stewards themselves. The reason our young adult events at Saint Clement are so successful is threefold: we have a great group of volunteers who lead this community and truly enjoy engaging new members in rewarding activities and rich conversation; wonderful staff members and a pastor who deeply care about parishioners; and a vibrant group of young adult members.

My involvement at Saint Clement has truly enriched my life. I am so grateful for this place and the wonderful friendships it has brought me, and I have no doubt that God led me here for a reason, as He has led us all here. I encourage everyone to explore what that reason might be for them by getting involved."

Farewell to Father Bill Wilson

Sunday, August 19, After Morning Masses

After two years of service to Saint Clement Parish while studying at Loyola University, Fr. Bill Wilson will be leaving us at the end of August. Please take the opportunity to express your thanks to Fr. Bill at hospitality following the Sunday morning Masses on August 19.

We are grateful to Fr. Bill for his sacramental service at Sunday and daily Mass, confessions and weddings. He has expanded our repertoire of music and devotions and celebrated with reverence and care. He has generously reached out to many parishioners and guests by his close listening and compassion. Many have found a connection to Christ, the parish, and to the church through his desire to dialogue. His thoughtful preaching has suggested many ways to understand the Gospel and recommended practical actions to bring it alive in our lives each week.

I'm grateful for his inspirational enthusiasm and idealism and for many fascinating and challenging theological discussions over early morning coffee. We wish Fr. Bill well and send him with every good blessing on his next pursuits.  -Fr. Ken Simpson
