Fertility, Facts, and Our Faith
Infertility is a painful struggle for many couples who long for a child. On February 9, 60 people from Saint Clement and surrounding parishes heard a Catholic perspective on infertility from Dr. Anthony Caruso, who has practiced as a reproductive endocrinologist for 15 years and, with his wife, has six children who were conceived with the help of fertility treatment. Dr. Caruso reviewed the major known causes of infertility, male and female, and the most commonly used infertility treatments, including drugs to stimulate ovulation, in vitro fertilization and its refinements.
Dr. Caruso explained that from a Catholic perspective, the principles guiding infertility treatment are the dignity of every human being and the dignity of marriage. Catholic teaching recognizes that a child is "the supreme gift of marriage" (CCC 2378). Understanding the pain of infertility, the Catholic Church fully supports treatments that heal physical problems and help couples to conceive children through intercourse. In documents such as Donum Vitae (1987) and Dignitas Personae (2008), the Catholic Church has expressed disagreement with methods of assisted reproduction, such as IVF, that separate the conception of a child from the loving intimacy of husband and wife, and can lead to attitudes and practices that do not uphold the dignity of the marriage and the child. All children, including those conceived through assisted reproduction, are beautiful human beings made in the image of God. However, Dr. Caruso spoke to his experience that assisted reproductive technologies encourage the view that children are a commodity rather than a gift -- an attitude that can lead to other troubling practices such as the widespread freezing of embryos, and selective abortion when assisted reproduction leads to a multiple pregnancy. Dr. Caruso discontinued his practice of IVF after understanding Dignitas Personae, and now focuses on natural means of helping couples to conceive.
Dr. Caruso explained some methods of infertility treatment, such as using ovulatory drugs and precisely pinpointing the time of ovulation that are consistent with Catholic teaching and offer realistic hope to couples longing for children. He has seen how infertility can greatly strain a marriage, but also how spouses can get through it together. He encouraged couples facing infertility to put the process and ultimate outcome in God's hands, and to stay focused on their love for each other.
If you or someone you know is facing infertility, please contact a member of the pastoral staff -- the Saint Clement community wants
to help and support you. Dr. Caruso can be reached at Stannecenter@comcast.net.

Stories of Stewards
As part of our ongoing engagement process, we have come to realize the importance of parishioners sharing their personal stories of how they have connected with Saint Clement as an important factor in their lives. As a feature twice a month, the Stewardship Council will share the stories and reflections of our engaged parishioners who are living a stewardship life of prayer, service, and giving. This week we hear from Lisa Friedlander.
"OK, I'll admit it, but don't think less of me. I did not choose Saint Clement as my parish because it has prayerful liturgies, or thought-provoking homilies, or fabulous opportunities to give back to my community, or a plethora of programs to help me grow spiritually, or even because it has a fantastic parish school. I chose it because I thought it was pretty.
My husband Mike and I were married here 12 years ago; we baptized our two children here who now attend that fantastic parish school I mentioned and somewhere along the way I realized just low lucky I was to have landed at this pretty church!
I've been involved in many ways at Saint Clement over the years; from Clement Moms Co-Chair to Anchor Ball Co-Chair. I have served on the planning committee for Service Day since it began seven years ago. My children and I make lunches for the homeless and serve coffee and donuts to them as they wait in line on Fridays to receive those lunches. I have the pleasure of working with our eighth graders and high schoolers in our youth group, the God Squad. Currently, I am serving as a member of Parish Council and helping to coordinate our Strengths for the Journey program.
Some of these volunteer opportunities have been more rewarding than others but what I love, each and every time I get involved, are the parishioners I meet. Although these volunteers differ in age, backgrounds, talents and experience, they all share such a commitment to our faith, our parish, and our community. It's truly incredible to be around such dedicated individuals. The more amazing people I meet through volunteering, the more I want to give of my time and resources. Saint Clement is pretty but it has become so much more than that to me and my family. I am happy to give of my time, talent, and treasure to help make Saint Clement the parish I love."

Did You Know?
Periodic Review of Priestly Ministry for Fr. Ken
Dear Parishioners,
Your Pastor, Father Kenneth Simpson is participating in the Periodic Review of Priestly Ministry as required by Archdiocese of Chicago Policy. Each priest in parish ministry is reviewed approximately every five years.
The process was designed by the staff of the Office of Ministerial Evaluation in consultation with Cardinal George, the Episcopal Vicars, members of the Priest Placement Board, and priests currently serving in local parishes. If you would like to participate in the process by completing a Survey Form, please contact Kathleen Leggdas, Director of the Office of Ministerial Evaluation, to request a Survey be sent to you. You may call 312-534-5265 or make your request by email to ome@archchicago.org. Electronic forms are not currently available however.
Information that you provide, including written comments, will be treated confidentially. At the completion of the Review Process, an overview of the results will be published in the parish bulletin. Above all, this is an opportunity for you to express gratitude for all that he has accomplished and to offer helpful suggestions regarding directions for future ministry for him and for your parish.
Thank you for your willingness to provide constructive comments regarding what you value and what you identify as areas for growth.
Sincerely,
Kathleen Leggdas, Director
Office of Ministerial Evaluation
