Greetings!

How often do you think about safety?
When was the last time you thought about your safety and security?

Here at Fahrenheit 451, we are always looking for new ways to keep our clients and their buildings safe.  One of the best ways to prevent property damage is through education.  We will be compiling our tips and frequently asked questions in a newsletter that will conveniently arrive in your inbox seasonally.  We hope that you find this newsletter relevant and we invite you to share these tips with building tenants, friends, and family members.
The Myths Surrounding Parkade Crime

Parkade CrimeParkade crime is on the rise and many of our property management clients simply do not know what to do to prevent it.  A number of common misconceptions about parkade crime often results in money being misspent on ineffective measures.

Locking the Stairwell Doors: Illegal & Ineffective

First off, most criminals responsible for parkade crime enter the building through the front door.  Many buildings attempt to fortify security on their parade level by locking all the doors that allow individuals from the parkade to the upper floors.   This mistake is not only against fire regulations and technically illegal, but it also does very little to prevent criminals from entering the front door and coming down to the parkade.

Surveillance Cameras: Useless Without Analytics

Security cameras can be a great tool for deterring crime or reviewing it after it has occurred, but cameras without good Analytic Software can be fruitless.  Often crimes go undetected for an extended period of time and without software that narrows your search you can be looking at hours of video footage in hopes of spotting a crime in progress.  Video Analytics allows you to filter out everything that is not human movement.  This means you only have to watch the video clips of actual activity and can ignore the rest.  With our Crime Seen Video software you can quickly review your video footage instantly from your personal computer.  No wasted time and less chance of the crime going unseen.

Overhead Doors and Card Access: Safe as the People Who Use Them

Intercom panels and garage doors do an excellent job of keeping out unwanted visitors to the building, but each time a tenant opens the door there is a possibility for a straggler to follow.  Spending thousands of dollars on a secure card access system is money wasted if your tenants are not educated to prevent unauthorized access.  Signage that informs tenants to wait for doors to shut before proceeding is inexpensive but very effective.

The sales team at Fahrenheit 451 are trained professionals in the field of crime prevention and can work with you to find the best solution for your specific parkade situation.  Do not hesitate to call us at 403-256-6622 to arrange for a quote or visit our website for more information.
Barbeque Season Safety Tips

Barbeque Safety
We've included this article for the personal safety of our clients, but also as a useful education tool that can be distributed to building tenants or condominium organizations in an effort to increase safety for everyone.

Summer is finally upon us and many of us are anxious to start up the barbecue, but before you begin grilling it is important to familiarize yourself with a few important safety precautions.

Getting Started
  • Place your barbeque outside, on level ground, at least one metre (roughly three feet) away from the house and away from wind and combustible materials.
Checking for Leaks
  • After connecting a propane cylinder, check for leaks using a solution of equal parts soap and water.
  • With the appliance turned off, brush the solution over all connections - open the cylinder valve and bubbles will form where there is a leak.
Using Your Barbeque
  • Both propane and natural gas flames should be mostly blue with yellow tips. If the flame is mostly yellow there may be a problem with your barbeque.  Do not use the barbeque until you contact a qualified gasfitter to inspect it.
