35th Ward Newsletter

                        June 21st, 2012

Dear Neighbor,

Soon after being elected into office in May of 2003, I joined the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) NALEO is the leadership organization with more than 6,000 Latino elected and appointed officials.  NALEO is non-partisan and facilitates the full participation of Latinos in the American political process from citizenship to public service.  Throughout the years, I have benefited greatly from the institutes, collaboration and training opportunities the organization has made available.  Today, I am proud to serve on the NALEO Board of Directors.

From June 21 - 23, 2012,  I will attend the NALEO 29th Annual Conference (A.K.A. The Latino Convention) at Disney's Contemporary Resort in Florida.  1,000 Latino officials representing millions of Americans across the country will participate in sessions designed to enhance governance skills.  Participants will gain a better understanding of critical issues like; education, healthcare, financial empowerment and the influence of the Latinos in American policy.

06/21/201206/21/2012President Barack Obama

will address the nation's Latino leadership on Friday, June 22.

Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney will  speak to the group on Thursday June 21st.  This historic event will be the first time both   Obama and Romney address Latino elected officials regarding issues facing all Americans.

Last Friday the Obama administration announced the new policy to stop deporting and begin granting work permits to younger illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. as children and have since led law-abiding lives. This election-year initiative addresses a top priority of an influential Latino electorate that has been vocal in its opposition to the administration's deportation policies.  This event will be a focal point of the upcoming presidential election.

For information about NALEO or The Latino Convention go to: www.naleo.org/annualconference.

Respectfully,

Alderman Rey Colón

 TIKI NIGHTreturns to

Every Sunday, Tiki Night returns to the Whistler! Visit us on this special night as we transform the inside of the Whistler into a tiki bar. We'll be serving tropical drinks culled from the "Weekly Tiki" section of our menu. You can enjoy original tiki creations from our bartenders, as well as a few unique spins on classics. With drinks served to you in tiki mugs and exotic punch bowls, these cocktails come dressed up and ready to be enjoyed. Feel free to dress for the occasion: leis, grass skirts, and Hawaiian shirts are encouraged! DJ Dr. Drase will be spinning exotica music throughout the night to enhance your tropical experience. You can't beat this slice of paradise at the beginning of  another beautiful Chicago summer.
