35th Ward Newsletter

March 22, 2012

Dear Neighbor,

Nationally recognized Artist and Illustrator Rafael Lopez will be in Chicago from June 14th thru June 23rd to attend various activities including events at the National Museum of MexicanObama Nuestra Voz Art, a visit to Loyola University Press where he recently designed 8 book covers and promoting art in the BBQ Fest at Six-Corners.  What I am most excited about; is that Rafael Lopez has agreed to design and paint a mural in the 35th Ward at Addison and Avondale as a gift to Chicago.

The "Community Paint Day" has been scheduled for June 22, 2012. Over 150 Volunteers ages 5 & up are expected to join Rafael Lopez on that day to make the Addison & Avondale mural a reality.  You are invited to participate!  For volunteer registration and regular updates, visit Mural at Addison and Avondale on FACEBOOK or call Anna Zolkowski Sobor at (773) 725-1267.

Book FiestaThe Addison Street Blue-line Station at the Kennedy Expressway is the gateway to many northwest-side neighborhoods and is passed by thousands of commuters daily.  This project will transform peeling viaduct walls into a beautiful, community painting. The estimated cost for this mural project is $7,000.  To date, $3,400 has been pledged from generous community organizations and area businesses.  I hope you will join me in supporting this neighborhood fundraiser and to unveil the final mural design.

REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS

Public Artist: Julia de Burgos Park

The Chicago Park District (CPD) is requesting proposals from artist or a collective of artists to work in cooperation with CPD and other entities (i.e. community members and/or organizations) on designing, creating, and installing educational and high quality artwork for Julia de Burgos Park, to be completed by August 2012.

The Julia de Burgos Park, located in the Logan Square Community, is adjacent to The Bloomingdale and is one of five parks that will serve as an access point. In January 2012, CPD named the park for Julia de Burgos. Born in Puerto Rico, Julia de Burgos (1914-1953) is considered one of the greatest poets of Latin America. A feminist activist who lived during a time when women were expected to fulfill traditional roles, Julia deBurgos wrote poems that wove themes of intimacy, the land, and the social struggle of the oppressed. She lived in New York for more than a decade. Even though she died at the young age of 39, she published 3 books of poetry that have received international recognition.

Direct any inquires, before 3/28/2012, to: Vivian Garcia, Program & Events Coordinator, Chicago Park District at 312.262.8496 or [email protected]

Volunteer As a Recycling Block Captain

Become part of a grassroots volunteer network and support the Blue Cart Recycling Program. The City invites residents who live in a Blue Cart area to help spread the word about the program to their neighbors, answer questions, and provide feedback to staff about how the program is working in your area.

Give as little or as much of your time as you're able. In exchange, we provide you with:

  • A monthly email update that includes current recycling rates, events, and initiatives.
  • Tips on how to reach out to your neighbors and tools, such as lawn signs and introduction cards to do so.
  • Information to help you accurately answer recycling related questions.
  • Access to knowledgeable staff to help you resolve issues and further educate you about the program.

Help us build a successful Blue Cart recycling program in your area, reduce the amount of waste in our landfills, encourage new business markets and outlets for recycled products and provide for the safety of our children, families and city workers by eliminating and/or reducing hazards in our garbage.

Become a Recycling Block Captain today or call 312.744.5702 and leave your name, address and phone number and a staff member will return your call.
