Dear Neighbor,
THE LOGAN THEATRE REOPENS THIS WEEKEND!
The Logan Theater located on 2646 N Milwaukee Avenue first opened in 1915 as the single-screen Paramount Theatre. Over time, the Logan Theatre was converted into a four-screen multiplex. Today, the treasured Logan Theater is one of Chicago's last stand-alone neighborhood movie houses. It has been closed for renovations since the fall of 2011, but will reopen this Saturday like you've never seen it before. Mark Fishman, the theater's owner is to be commended for restoring and transforming this time-worn cinema into a hip and vibrant wonder.
I have not been able to resist going into the theatre throughout every phase of its construction and witnessing the discovery of marble, stained glass and vintage movie posters behind its walls. The Art Deco style details have been refurbished and many more have been added including an amazing antique phone booth. The amount of seats has been downsized from the 906 lumpy, clunkers to 595 new comfortable recliners. The sound system has been enhanced to deliver pin drops and thunder. The new screens and digital projectors have 3-D capabilities. The concession and cafe area now spill over into an expanded storefront offering plush new bar & lounge. I have every confidence that this renewed entertainment hub will accelerate the revitalization of this neighborhood's commercial gateway.
The Logan Theater's soft opening will feature classic movies for only $1 this Saturday.
Join the Logan Theatre Mailing List and stay connected on Facebook & Twitter to find out more about special offers and promotions.
I can talk about it all day long, but you must come with friends and family to experience it for yourself.
Respectfully, Rey Colón Alderman, 35th Ward

Chicago Park District
REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS
Public Artist: Julia de Burgos Park
The Chicago Park District (CPD) is requesting proposals from artist or a collective of artists to work in cooperation with CPD and other entities (i.e. community members and/or organizations) on designing, creating, and installing educational and high quality artwork for Julia de Burgos Park, to be completed by August 2012.
The Julia de Burgos Park, located in the Logan Square Community, is adjacent to The Bloomingdale and is one of five parks that will serve as an access point. In January 2012, CPD named the park for Julia de Burgos. Born in Puerto Rico, Julia de Burgos (1914-1953) is considered one of the greatest poets of Latin America. A feminist activist who lived during a time when women were expected to fulfill traditional roles, Julia deBurgos wrote poems that wove themes of intimacy, the land, and the social struggle of the oppressed. She lived in New York for more than a decade. Even though she died at the young age of 39, she published 3 books of poetry that have received international recognition.
