Dear Neighbor,

Do we know enough about each other?   How can Artists and Government work together?  Many of us have been promoting the arts as a way to grow the local economy for many years, but rarely do we all get together in the same place at the same time to talk about it.  I am co-hosting a Community Conversation with the Department of Cultural Affairs & Special Events "Why Culture Matters?".  The original cultural plan for Chicago was developed in 1986 under Mayor Harold WashingtonToday, Mayor Rahm Emanuel has built on that tradition by commissioning the Cultural Advisory Council to develop a 2012 Chicago Cultural Plan that promotes vibrant arts & cultural hubs in every Chicago community. We are a prime example of what that work in progress looks like.

New "Gallery and Think Space" Brings Unique Vision to Thriving Arts Community of Logan Square

With more than 30 galleries closing their doors in Chicago over the past two years, it takes real guts and determination to open a new gallery.

Taking on the challenge is Beauty and Brawn Art Gallery and Think Space, a multi-media gallery and arts education facility, set to open its doors in Chicago's Logan Square neighborhood.

Public grand opening will be held
Saturday, March 17,2012
3501 W. Fullerton Ave. Chicago, IL

Reception from 6 - 10 pm.

For more information about the gallery and the opening, visit Beauty And Brawn Gallery

"What I set out to achieve," explains gallery owner and photographer Lindsey Meyers, "is to combine the intelligence and intellectual pulse of an art gallery with the indelible power and importance of an education space that truly lies outside the box."

BBQ Brand
BBQ Center
That's right, there's a new menu in town, but don't panic quite yet. All of your old favorites like The Beast and the Rib/Chicken Combo are still there, but we have added a little something extra...power. When "Branding Your Brand", you shall choose your bread (we love the pretzel roll), your meat (burger? maybe pork? perhaps smoked tofu??), and your toppings (so many delightful combinations). You now have the chance to live forever through your legacy in sandwich form, because creation is king and we are handing you the crown.

The possibilities are endlessly delicious. Wide-eyed foodies ourselves, all of us at the restaurant are drooling over these "Brands" already invented by guests: the "JR": the burnt ends burger on a potato bun topped with bacon, smoked gouda, a fried egg and pulled pork...the "Veg Head by Brian": smoked portabella mushroom on a pretzel roll (!) topped with goat cheese and southwestern veggie chili...and the "Ally": pulled pork on ciabatta bread topped with swiss cheese, grilled onions, coleslaw and smoky spicy sauce. Be the next to impress. We can't wait!

Bonus: Fish Fridays at Brand BBQ!
Each and every Friday from 5-10 pm, Brand will once again be offering our "Fish and Chips": a cornbread-battered Cod Po' Boy on a hoagie roll with mixed greens, tomato, coleslaw, citrus tartar sauce and hand cut fries for $11.95. We promise it won't taste like Lent!

Volunteer As a Recycling Block Captain

Become part of a grassroots volunteer network and support the Blue Cart Recycling Program. The City invites residents who live in a Blue Cart area to help spread the word about the program to their neighbors, answer questions, and provide feedback to staff about how the program is working in your area.

Give as little or as much of your time as you're able. In exchange, we provide you with:

  • A monthly email update that includes current recycling rates, events, and initiatives.
  • Tips on how to reach out to your neighbors and tools, such as lawn signs and introduction cards to do so.
  • Information to help you accurately answer recycling related questions.
  • Access to knowledgeable staff to help you resolve issues and further educate you about the program.

Help us build a successful Blue Cart recycling program in your area, reduce the amount of waste in our landfills, encourage new business markets and outlets for recycled products and provide for the safety of our children, families and city workers by eliminating and/or reducing hazards in our garbage.

Become a Recycling Block Captain today or call 312.744.5702 and leave your name, address and phone number and a staff member will return your call.
