35th Ward Newsletter

 February 23, 2012

Dear Neighbor,

I would like to thank everyone who came out to the Feb. 1st public meeting supporting the proposed zoning change to allow for a Live/Work Space District on Milwaukee Avenue from 2800 North at Kimball, to 3000 North at Central Park.  Today, the zoning on that stretch of Milwaukee is mixed with B1-2 & B1-3 Neighborhood Shopping District and B3-1 Community Shopping & C1-2 Neighborhood Commercial District.  The proposal to designate a B2-2 Neighborhood Mixed-Use district at the start of this month was met with overwhelming support.

The B2 Live/Work Zoning designation was added to the City of Chicago's zoning code a few years ago to allow artists access to affordable, multipurpose Live/Work space. We have anchored the Milwaukee, Diversey and Kimball intersections with the Hairpin Lofts Artist Live/Work Apartments with the Arts Center on the second floor.  This immediate area will soon be even enhanced further with the vacation of Woodard Street to allow for a public plaza, rain garden, and outdoor exhibit/performance space right across the street.

On the Northern end of Milwaukee Avenue at Central Park; the Puerto Rican Arts Alliance recently renovated the former Fire House at 3000 N. Elbridge Ave. and have created a cultural center for emerging artists and musicians to showcase their talents.  The Puerto Rican Arts Alliance was founded in 1998 to increase awareness, knowledge and access to the arts.  That intersection will also be enriched with the construction of Aspira's new high school emphasizing a business & finance curriculumWhat we have in between these two developing intersections of Milwaukee Avenue is struggling businesses, empty storefronts and a unique opportunity to create a sustainable place for the arts to flourish.

Please join me in encouraging artists and landlords to make use of this Live/Work space incentive on this part of Milwaukee Avenue.  The Zoning Change will be heard by the Committee on Zoning on March 1st and is expected to pass at the Regular City Council Meeting on Wednesday, March 14, 2012After that date, this stressed portion of Milwaukee Avenue will have a new ability to live, work, and reinvent itself.

With more than 30 galleries closing their doors in Chicago over the past two years, it takes real guts and determination to open a new gallery.

Taking on the challenge is Beauty and Brawn Art Gallery and Think Space, a multi-media gallery and arts education facility, set to open its doors in Chicago's Logan Square neighborhood.

Public grand opening will be held
Saturday, March 17,2012
3501 W. Fullerton Ave. Chicago, IL

Reception from 6 - 10 pm.

For more information about the gallery and the opening, visit Beauty And Brawn Gallery

"What I set out to achieve," explains gallery owner and photographer Lindsey Meyers, "is to combine the intelligence and intellectual pulse of an art gallery with the indelible power and importance of an education space that truly lies outside the box."

Volunteer As a Recycling Block Captain

Become part of a grassroots volunteer network and support the Blue Cart Recycling Program. The City invites residents who live in a Blue Cart area to help spread the word about the program to their neighbors, answer questions, and provide feedback to staff about how the program is working in your area.

Give as little or as much of your time as you're able. In exchange, we provide you with:

  • A monthly email update that includes current recycling rates, events, and initiatives.
  • Tips on how to reach out to your neighbors and tools, such as lawn signs and introduction cards to do so.
  • Information to help you accurately answer recycling related questions.
  • Access to knowledgeable staff to help you resolve issues and further educate you about the program.

Help us build a successful Blue Cart recycling program in your area, reduce the amount of waste in our landfills, encourage new business markets and outlets for recycled products and provide for the safety of our children, families and city workers by eliminating and/or reducing hazards in our garbage.

Become a Recycling Block Captain today or call 312.744.5702 and leave your name, address and phone number and a staff member will return your call.
