Dear Neighbor,
I would like to thank everyone who came out to the Feb. 1st public meeting supporting the proposed zoning change to allow for a Live/Work Space District on Milwaukee Avenue from 2800 North at Kimball, to 3000 North at Central Park. Today, the zoning on that stretch of Milwaukee is mixed with B1-2 & B1-3 Neighborhood Shopping District and B3-1 Community Shopping & C1-2 Neighborhood Commercial District. The proposal to designate a B2-2 Neighborhood Mixed-Use district at the start of this month was met with overwhelming support.
The B2 Live/Work Zoning designation was added to the City of Chicago's zoning code a few years ago to allow artists access to affordable, multipurpose Live/Work space. We have anchored the Milwaukee, Diversey and Kimball intersections with the Hairpin Lofts Artist Live/Work Apartments with the Arts Center on the second floor. This immediate area will soon be even enhanced further with the vacation of Woodard Street to allow for a public plaza, rain garden, and outdoor exhibit/performance space right across the street.
On the Northern end of Milwaukee Avenue at Central Park; the Puerto Rican Arts Alliance recently renovated the former Fire House at 3000 N. Elbridge Ave. and have created a cultural center for emerging artists and musicians to showcase their talents. The Puerto Rican Arts Alliance was founded in 1998 to increase awareness, knowledge and access to the arts. That intersection will also be enriched with the construction of Aspira's new high school emphasizing a business & finance curriculum. What we have in between these two developing intersections of Milwaukee Avenue is struggling businesses, empty storefronts and a unique opportunity to create a sustainable place for the arts to flourish.
Please join me in encouraging artists and landlords to make use of this Live/Work space incentive on this part of Milwaukee Avenue. The Zoning Change will be heard by the Committee on Zoning on March 1st and is expected to pass at the Regular City Council Meeting on Wednesday, March 14, 2012. After that date, this stressed portion of Milwaukee Avenue will have a new ability to live, work, and reinvent itself.
City of Chicago Respectfully, Rey Coln Alderman, 35th Ward |
