Dear Neighbor,
After almost 40-years, Logan Square will soon see a new McDonald's at 2707 N. Milwaukee Ave. This restaurant is owned and operated by Virginia Ojeda who is a local businesswoman and independent franchisee of McDonald's Corporation. While McDonald's Corporation is undertaking a store-by-store makeover, the Logan Square McDonald's will offer a more grown-up yet relevant feel for the next generation.
Most of us know that on a large chain-scale, McDonald's continues to compete with the likes of Starbucks. Therefore, in addition to exhibiting local art, the owner will replace the old, industrial chairs and bright red-yellow interiors with wooden tables, comfortable faux leather chairs, contemporary lamps, music and earth tones.
McDonald's is not only out to change the physical appeal of the restaurant, but also the overall attitude of the place. They no longer want to be perceived as the fast-food that rushes you in and out the door, but rather an atmosphere that says; "stay and lounge". They are committed to creating a more at home "Nothin' Less, New Wave Coffee and Café Moustache" kind-of-vibe. The new and improved McDonald's will promote hanging out, tapping free Wi-Fi and chillin' with a chicken wrap.
McDonald's has agreed to new facilities with environmental benefits. They joined Energy Star in 1993 and will support our local efforts to reduce energy consumption. The new McDonald's will have a highly reflective roof to reduce solar heat and save energy. They will use high efficiency automated control lighting, the most energy efficient hoods, high efficiency roof top HVAC units, 90% efficient gas fired hot water heaters, low-flow toilets and plumbing fixtures.
Operationally, they will recycle their cardboard and use only safe cleaners with no harmful chemicals.
Once the permits are issued, this new restaurant will take about 3-months to build. We are fortunate to have the newly renovated Logan Theater re-opening, new businesses occupying Milwaukee Avenue during the worst of economic times. Let's welcome the reinvented Logan Square McDonald's with a look and feel that's not just for kids anymore.
Respectfully, Rey Colón Alderman, 35th Ward

Logan Square/Milwaukee Avenue
Green Development Corridor
Green infrastructure funding for homeowners and businesses
Project Progress Report: Milwaukee Avenue Green Development Corridor
Thanks to a $200,000 grant from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency's Illinois Green Infrastructure Grant program, in 2012, residents and business owners along a portion of Milwaukee Avenue in Chicago's Logan Square neighborhood will be eligible to apply for funding to support property improvements that reduce neighborhood flooding and protect Chicago's waterways. MPC is partnering with Ald. Rey Colón and the 35th Ward office to help lead this pilot project to demonstrate how clustering green infrastructure investments can make a measurable difference.
To kick off the project, Ald. Colón and MPC are inviting local designers and artists to enter a contest to create the logo and branding identity for the Milwaukee Avenue Green Development Corridor. The winning designer will receive $100 cash and a $50 gift card to Logan Square's own Revolution Brewing. The winning design will be displayed on street signs and banners, the LoganSquareH2o.org website and other promotional materials. The deadline to submit entries is Feb. 15, 2012, at 4 p.m.

Every Tuesday night at The Whistler, the Relax Attack Jazz Series showcases our vision for presenting Chicago's top jazz artists in a lively atmosphere, full of cocktail-shaking and spirited conversation. Performing on January 24th is The Engines. The group began as trio, featuring several mainstays of the Chicago improvised music scene: Dave Rempis on saxophones, Nate McBride on bass, and Tim Daisy on drums. Later, trombonist Jeb Bishop was added to the group for one concert, but the dynamic worked so well that Bishop immediately became a regular member of the band. All four of these musicians have distinguished themselves as leaders with their own groups, but they formed this band to purposely shirk that duty in favor of a more equal musical relationship that better reflects the nature of their improvisations. Each member contributes original compositions, providing a wide range of expression from high energy jousting over driving bass vamps to quieter moments of melodic exploration. With McBride on both acoustic and electric bass, the band can explore some of the sonic textures associated with the early AACM, or launch into hard-hitting Zeppelin-like grooves, and they use this range of possibilities to its fullest.Other upcoming Relax Attack shows include:
