Dear Neighbor,
I was deeply saddened by the news that John Pennycuff passed away last Sunday January 29, 2012. He was 47 years-young and a life-long resident of Logan Square. John was educated at Monroe Elementary, Taft High School, Badger High School in Lake Geneva and Columbia College. John was made aware of a serious illness only a few short months ago. I met both John and his now husband; Robert Castillo in the late 90's after I was first approached by local residents to run for alderman. John and Robert both grilled me on Gay, Lesbian and Transgender issues of which at the time, I knew nothing. I credit them both for educating me and always making sure that my decisions were inclusive of everyone. I sincerely appreciate the unconditional support they both have given me throughout the years.
This Windy City Times article released on the day of his passing [Click Here For Story] lists many of John's accomplishments and affiliations including: The Mayor's Advisory Council on LGBT Issues, Queer Nation Chicago Member, Windy City Media Group's Office Manager, ACT UP Volunteer and the 2003 Induction into the Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame to name a few. John was a Unity Park Advisory Council volunteer. He coordinated the Logan Square Farmer's Market for the Chamber of Commerce. John also maintained the 35th Ward Website and was responsible for sending out this very Newsletter each week.
My heart is heavy because John was a good friend who I will dearly miss. For those who never knew him, John Pennycuff was the nicest man you could ever hope to meet. He was the model, non-violent activist who quietly but effectively served the communities he loved through action more than words. The one day visitation for John Pennycuff is TODAY only from 3:00-9:00 PM at:
Jaeger Funeral Home
3526 N. Cicero
(773) 545-1320
Our prayers, thoughts and deepest sympathies go out to Robert, their family and loved ones.
Respectfully, Rey Colón Alderman, 35th Ward
City of Chicago

Chicago Ward Remap: A Lawsuit Waiting to Happen? Posted Feb 1, 2012 at 02:40 PM By Carol Felsenthal
When the ward remap was rushed to a vote in the City Council on January 19, it garnered 41 "yes" votes, the minimum required to avoid putting competing maps before voters in a referendum. Mayor Rahm Emanuel expressed relief; now, he said, the lawmakers could move on to deal with important issues, like crime. Click For The Complete Story |

A Note From Clerk Mendoza
Chicagoan,
The year has started off a very busy one in the City Clerk's Office! Earlier this month we launched the first-ever Dog of Distinction Campaign. The program is a very fun and cool way we are promoting dog registration before there is an increase in enforcement of this law in the spring! We also had two City Council meetings in January, including a special meeting to approve the new ward map. Check out this special page on our website for more details on that. Finally, I hope that anyone attending college or with a child attending college takes advantage of a very valuable free service my office provides. On Tuesday and Thursday evenings you can join volunteer experts from Ladder Up to receive one-on-one assistance in completing the FAFSA, the first step in receiving financial aid for college. The program starts this Tuesday and runs through April 17!
Sincerely,
Susana A. Mendoza |

Every Tuesday night at The Whistler, the Relax Attack Jazz Series showcases our vision for presenting Chicago's top jazz artists in a lively atmosphere, full of cocktail-shaking and spirited conversation. Performing on January 24th is The Engines. The group began as trio, featuring several mainstays of the Chicago improvised music scene: Dave Rempis on saxophones, Nate McBride on bass, and Tim Daisy on drums. Later, trombonist Jeb Bishop was added to the group for one concert, but the dynamic worked so well that Bishop immediately became a regular member of the band. All four of these musicians have distinguished themselves as leaders with their own groups, but they formed this band to purposely shirk that duty in favor of a more equal musical relationship that better reflects the nature of their improvisations. Each member contributes original compositions, providing a wide range of expression from high energy jousting over driving bass vamps to quieter moments of melodic exploration. With McBride on both acoustic and electric bass, the band can explore some of the sonic textures associated with the early AACM, or launch into hard-hitting Zeppelin-like grooves, and they use this range of possibilities to its fullest.Other upcoming Relax Attack shows include: The Caroline Davis/Mike Allemana Quartet (Jan. 31); Keefe Jackson (Feb. 7); Mike Reed, Jeb Bishop, and Matt Schneider (Feb. 14), and Frank Rosaly's Green and Gold (Feb. 21). All shows are 21+. No cover charge. The Whistler2421 N. Milwaukee Ave. Chicago, IL 60647whistlerchicago.com |

Logan Square/Milwaukee Avenue
Green Development Corridor
Green infrastructure funding for homeowners and businesses
Project Progress Report: Milwaukee Avenue Green Development Corridor
Thanks to a $200,000 grant from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency's Illinois Green Infrastructure Grant program, in 2012, residents and business owners along a portion of Milwaukee Avenue in Chicago's Logan Square neighborhood will be eligible to apply for funding to support property improvements that reduce neighborhood flooding and protect Chicago's waterways. MPC is partnering with Ald. Rey Colón and the 35th Ward office to help lead this pilot project to demonstrate how clustering green infrastructure investments can make a measurable difference.
To kick off the project, Ald. Colón and MPC are inviting local designers and artists to enter a contest to create the logo and branding identity for the Milwaukee Avenue Green Development Corridor. The winning designer will receive $100 cash and a $50 gift card to Logan Square's own Revolution Brewing. The winning design will be displayed on street signs and banners, the LoganSquareH2o.org website and other promotional materials. The deadline to submit entries is Feb. 15, 2012, at 4 p.m.

The Chicago Office of Tourism and Culture would like to share a great international media placement about the city.
A great radio feature aired on German radio, Jan. 29, and focused on a stroll through Hyde Park as "Obama's Chicago." The feature aired on nationwide radio station Deutschlandfunk and included Obama's home, barber, church, book store, etc. The author and moderator of this feature was Mr. Sven Ahnert. Mr. Ahnert was assisted by our office during his trip to Chicago in September 2011.
This Chicago feature is about eight minutes long and was broadcast during the travel show Sonntagsspaziergang (590,000 listeners; ad value: $26,000 USD). You can listen to the feature and read a transcript Click Here
