Pirates Clean Up Garbage at GAIS!
by David Giesen

Drama 2012Well, not really. But six girl pirates and their parrot buddy are on campus this next week, part of the GAIS Theater Club production of AQUA PIE WAHL STRASSE, which will be presented next Thursday, May 24, 6 pm at the Cubberly Theater in Palo Alto.

You won't want to miss this comedy about how kids might deal with the environmental mess adults keep telling the kids the adults are creating. The pirate girls live on an abandoned pirate ship at the foot of a city garbage heap-in Germantown, PA, no less-and make their living by scavenging through the garbage. It's a pretty good life, as it turns out, because pirates abide by an ethic of fair treatment of one another, which contrasts with the hierarchal treatment the rest of the world lives by when it comes to the environment.

In this story, three people from the so-called civilized world come to visit the pirates, who operate a renowned fish 'n' chips joint known as the Aqua Pie Café. The visitors become enamored of the pirate culture and decide to stay, but are they welcome? You must be present to find out.

Also part of the evening's entertainment is music with the GAIS Music Program under the baton of Amy Nathan, and two more one-act plays, MASCON, featuring other 3rd and 4th graders, and an abbreviated A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM directed by Jay Levin and featuring middle -schoolers.

Sommerfest is Coming

In the past weeks we have been busy getting ready for this year's Sommerfest on Saturday, June 2nd from 2-5pm. The theme this year is no surprise, "Olympics', and our activities and games will embrace this theme. All students who participate will be winners and receive a gold medal for excellence in having fun. We will also have an art exhibition showcasing art works from all grades. Musical performances will be by the Preschool and Vorschule, the school choir, the band and also showcase a student talent show. In addition, we will have the climbing wall, a magician, German food from Esther's Bakery and much more. We encourage all participants to wear a sport shirt/t-shirt connected to the Olympic theme of sports or countries.

Participation in all the games, activities and the climbing wall, plus the medals, will be sold prior to and on the day of the event. Wristbands will be sold for $10 each. To run this event, which typically draws hundreds of participants, we will need a number of volunteers. Please contact Stella to get on the volunteer list. This is a great opportunity to get volunteer hours before the year ends.

Please remember that applications to participate in the student talent show are due tomorrow, May 18th. Watch your email next week for the Sommerfest invitation with detailed program information.

Animal ShelterThis Friday at 1pm all our students will participate in the walk-a-thon which will raise money for WWF as result of our 5th grade exhibition. Other fifth grade students also exhibited actions as culmination of their research. Katharina Merk  successfully addressed the City Council last Thursday evening in an effort to save the local animal shelter. Many classmates, family members and teachers supported her as she took action towards a cause close to her heart. In another effort to make a difference Ian Lindley has placed boxes outside the school to collect food for the second harvest bank and is hoping more community members will support his action in helping people who live in poverty. The food drive will end tomorrow. Congratulations Katharina and Ian on taken an active part in making this world a better place. We will continue to report on the actions other students have taken as a result of their learning at GAIS.

Parent Day DachseThe 'Dachse' class celebrated parent day today. For this occasion, the parents were greeted with a song about ladybugs, which was followed by a delicious breakfast and a special gift. The children and teachers worked hard for this special day and all were very excited. All other classes will have their parent day tomorrow and the children are very busy preparing for it. As I write this, I can smell cakes and scones baking in the oven and I know that the parents will receive a wonderful treat tomorrow.

TrackThe Sportfest is just around the corner and will take place June 15th at the Palo Alto High School. Right now my planning commission and I are working hard to get everything organized and set up so we all can dive into the last preparation for this fun event right before the end of the school year!

This year every child will get to participate in three competitive and three fun stations and in the end we will also have a class competition for each grade!

To make this event run as smoothly as possible we would appreciate if parents are willing to support the staff team during the day. We will set up a Jooners sign-up list to provide more information where your help is needed. Please check your email next week to sign-up. Thanks for your collaboration!

Author Joan Holub Donates German Translations to Library

GoettergirlsJoan Holub is the author of the popular children's literature series, "Goddess Girls". The eight books already published, written for an 8-12 year old audience, put a modern spin on classic Greek myths. Two of her books have now been translated into German and have received outstanding reviews. Our thanks to Joan who has very generously donated her German language copies of these books to the GAIS library.

Thanks also to Natalie Lorenzi who worked with Peter Metzger in Italy. Natalie is a librarian and children's author (Flying the Dragon) and she suggested to Joan to donate her German language translations to the GAIS library. Happy reading!!

We've had books donated to the Library and classrooms which will be enjoyed by many students.

GASPA Summer-School-Camp

GASPA 2 Märchen aus dem Sack geschüttelt!

Attention all 3 to 12 year olds, in particular 9 to 12 year olds!!  What would you say to 4  fun filled weeks, from June 25th to July 20th, of movement, music, theater, dance, learning new skills, and much, much more? What exactly the plan is and what we end up doing is for the most part, up to you. Can everything be decided by you? No! What is and remains is: Do it in German! Everything we do during the course of the 4 weeks; speaking, writing, reading, etc. will be done in German.
One other thing is also not up for discussion, namely Fairytales. If you think they are boring and only stuff for little kids, then you don't know much about Fairytales!
What do the above mentioned activities have to do with Fairytales? Join us for 4 weeks and find out. Do things differently, do things you may have never done before, do something for the first time, learn new moves, try out new skills which you thought you could never do. Don't be a frog, come on, jump in! Betcha, you won't regret it!
