Easter Picnic

Easter Picnic 2012Thanks to all the volunteers, and their great organization, this year's Easter picnic once again was a huge success. The picnic took place at beautiful Huddart Park. As usual this was a very popular event with hundreds of participants from the GAIS community. The children had great fun searching for the Easter eggs in the woods. The potluck was delicious, thanks to everyone's contribution. Special thanks to Gisela Pyka who has been organizing this event for many years and senior student Martin Pyka, who did a lot of the work setting things up. Even thoug Gisela's son, Martin, will be graduating this year we hope to see Gisela and family at GAIS picnics for many more years to come.

News from the Head of School

Next week we will be closed for our Spring Break and students, teachers and hopefully many of the parents will have a last chance to rest and to recharge batteries before we head into the last lap of our academic year. There will also be no school on Monday, April 23 due to a scheduled in-service day for staff. On this day our teachers will be on the campus for an in-service program that will focus on such things as inquiry based instruction and curriculum development.

Our last two months of school will be very busy and full of exciting events. A new event this year, which I am very thrilled about, is the Performing Arts Evening scheduled for Thursday, May 24th. Our extra curricular drama program has become so popular this semester that we have three different groups meeting each week, two directed by Mr. Giesen and one by Mr. Levin. In addition, our instrumental music program, headed by our music teacher Miss Nathan, has taken off in a big way with lots of band and small ensemble activity going on daily. Given the level of growth and interest in this important area, we have decided it only fitting to have an appropriate venue for our students to perform and thus we have rented the Cubberley theater in Palo Alto. All members of the school community are invited and I am confident that there will be a packed audience to see and support our budding actors and musicians. Please join us on May 24th in celebrating the arts and supporting our school.

MYP Corner by Dominic Liechti

Dominic

Two years ago our school was authorized by the German government to grant the German language certificates at GAIS. The application process for the authorization was an intense yet rewarding experience. As a result our students at the International Middle School are participating currently in different language proficiency tests in German. We provide two German certificates in our school based on the "Common European Framework of Reference for Languages", which is divided into six levels.

The lowest level on the framework is A1 and the highest level is C2 (sequence: A1->A2->B1->B2->C1->C2). The C2 level is the "Abitur or Matura" level in Europe. Our German A students at the International Middle School are taking the test on an A2 level in 6th grade and on a B1 level in 8th grade. The certificate on the B1 level, named "Deutsches Sprachdiplom I" (DSD I), allows for the requirements of admission to German speaking high schools to be met.

The test includes an oral and a written communication part. In the oral communication section the students have to speak in front of an audience about a given topic. In addition, they incorporate a self-made poster in their presentation. Afterwards they are required to reflect on certain questions that will be asked by the proctors. In fact, the 8th graders are supposed to make their presentation in front of an official from Germany.

The written part is divided into reading comprehension, listening comprehension and a German essay. Representatives of the German government will correct the "DSD I" and the results will be stored for further reference in the German government database.

For students who are transitioning out to high schools, GAIS will offer the DSDII " on the C1/C2 Level in future. This certificate allows them to show proficiency in German language at the University level.

I would like to thank Eva Chase for her tremendous dedication in preparing the students for the exams, which were conducted last week.

PYP Corner by Maike Silver

Maike 4/12Personal and social education (PSE) is an integrated component in every PYP unit. Every 6 weeks there is a focus shift on particular skill sets, attitudes and attributes of the learner profile. Besides that components such as self-concept, interaction with others and organization for learning, health and safety are highlighted throughout various times of the school year in every grade.

All our units under the Transdisciplinary theme "Who we are" have a specific focus on social concepts such as friendship (Pre-School), traditions and celebrations (VS), healthy habits (Grade 1), identity (grade 2), relationships and their influences (grade 3), belief systems (grade 4) and changing bodies (grade 5).

This year we also purchased several storybooks that support the development of these concepts. We explored "The Golden Rule" (do unto others as you would them do unto you) and "Feathers" (a Jewish tale from Eastern Europe about rumors) during assemblies. Several classes also did follow ups throughout the year for class and personal goal settings. Some other books classes incorporated into their lessons included: "Billy Bully" (a schoolyard tale), "One" (standing up for others), "Not a box" (being open-minded), and "For every child" (children's rights).

Classroom conferences, role-play, team building events (movie afternoon, sleep- overs, birthday celebrations, holiday breakfast, "girl/boy-talk"), school spirit events, IMS anti- bullying play and personal reflections are some other ways the school is promoting a balance between academic success and social emotional stability for students.

Thinking ahead to the upcoming school year we already scheduled a couple of plays for assemblies in the Elementary School. In the fall we will see "Oskar & the Big Bully Battle" and in the spring "Oskar & the last straw" both plays about empowering students to deal with tough issues.

Should you have any questions regarding this topic, please feel free to come and talk to me.

Preschool Corner by Heike Schmalstieg

Heike 4/12To finish our unit on the five senses, all preschool classes prepared a student-led conference. This was a excellent opportunity for the parents to come in and gain some insight into what their child is doing and the chance to talk about it with their child. While the 3-year olds were more involved with just showing the parents around, many of the 5-year olds offered more detailed explanations. The children proudly took their parents around the classroom, testing whether they could navigate their way blindfolded, could tell what they were hearing, feeling and smelling and truly enjoyed watching their faces as they were feeding them things that were bitter, salty and sweet. Giving each child the chance to have some time with their parents inside, of course meant some patience for the children that had to wait for their turn.

Yearbook 2011-12 - Last Chance

Yearbook 2012Have you forgotten to order your 2011-12 year book? Don't worry you still have a few more days to make sure that you and your children will get this memory treasure chest, that like a good bottle of Chateau Margaux, gets better as the years go on. The last day to submit the form to the office is May 4. Please note that only the exact number of pre-ordered yearbooks will be printed. We are also looking for companies to advertise in our yearbook.  This is an excellent and low cost way for your company to support international education and the school's mission.  Please contact the office if you would like to discuss this further or if you have any ideas or leads.

Fundraiser

Piggy BankFirst of all a big "Thank You" to the 35% of our GAIS parents who have contributed to this year's annual fund.  With your help we were able to raise an impressive $ 69,250 so far.

We are even more excited about the fact that this success was achieved without the need to constantly remind people about the importance of this drive (yes, we know how much you like these "gentle reminders" from Fundraiser Committee members...). This was actually our intention. We think our GAIS community now understands how important the two major Fundraiser events are for the school and your children:

1. The Annual Fundraiser Party in October: This year's "Viva Las Vegas" event will take place on October 20th,2012 at the Faultline Brewery
2. The GAIS Annual Fund: year round Fundraising Event, with a special focus in March and April.

In order not to spam you with more "Fundraising Messages"  we like to express how important it is, that you are participating in these events. If you haven't already, we hope you will consider to support the Annual Fund at a level that makes sense to you. Every amount helps and as indicated previously the participation rate matters in order to  be eligible for other third party donations. You are just a click away from not getting personal reminder e-mails and phone calls by one of our Fundraiser Committee members.
