News from the Head of School
ISA Tests This Week at GAIS
For the past two days our Grade 3 and 5 students have been participating in the International Schools' Assessment Program (ISA). The ISA assessment program is designed especially for students in international schools in Grades 3 to 10. It is based on the internationally endorsed reading and mathematical literacy frameworks of the OECD's Program for International Student Assessment (PISA), and assesses students in the areas of Reading Literacy, Mathematical Literacy, Writing
The ISA program is in its fifth year and is being used to give the school some information about how our students do in various areas in comparison to other international schools throughout the world. We feel that this international norm group is the most relevant for our students and academic program. The test, which is in English, features a broad cultural base and is a combination of multiple-choice and open-ended questions and prompts. There is no preparation needed for the ISA tests other than a good night's sleep and a solid breakfast and the program has a minimal impact on learning time at school.
Our third and fifth grade students have taken the ISA tests with great seriousness and displayed focused effort and concentration during the testing sessions. The tests are sent back to Australia for processing and the individual results will be communicated to students and averages published for the school community in May.
For more information you can look at the ISA website: www.acer.edu.au.

Why should my child go to an IB School?
First and foremost in an ever changing fast paste 21st century it is important to find a balance between physical, social-emotional development and academic work. Skills like critical thinking and communication are essential for on-going learning. Students at our school are actively involved in exploring themes that have national significance and are internationally transferable (e.g. explore the Native Americans, but making connections to the indigenous people of other countries). The IB provides the school with high standards around a written, taught andassessed curriculum. To ensure the quality of the program the school undergoes a rigorous evaluation process every 5 years. Teachers are required to be trained in best practices from around the world. This includes mandatory reflections on how to improve student learning. Over the last few years the teachers have collaborated in developing a well-balanced program of inquiry that integrates the social studies and science components of international significance. These are taught in six units per grade level and build on each other from year to year. The high international standards combined with the collaboration and sharing of ideas and best practices amongst teachers is what makes this program outstanding. These are just a few reasons why you should send your child to our IB School.

Preschool Corner by Heike Schmalstieg
The animal unit is coming to the end and the preschoolers are showing off their end-of-unit projects (summation assessments). Each child in the 'Murmeltiere class' chose an animal, spent some time researching facts in class and with their parents at home about their animal, creating the animal and its habitat and presenting at first to their own classmates and then showing off their knowledge to the older vorschule children. The end result was quite impressive. The children demonstrated enthusiasm, creativity, thinking skills, research skills, communication skills and much pride in their work. Thank you to the parents for their collaboration. Other classes worked on similar projects to conclude the unit.

News from the P.E. Department - Janine Weers
This unit we will be focusing on soccer, which means that we will not just play soccer all the time. We will also be playing a lot of different little games in which the kids will learn how to be social, fair, well organized, good leaders. I think especially at this age the kids should learn these manners before becoming great soccer players! The will learn that losing is a part of playing sports, that teams are not always equal, but also that winning makes you feel great and it is important to stick to rules to have a fun game going. Playing soccer is a great opportunity to teach a lot of skills but also a lot of social manners!
