Re-Enrollment 2012-13

Re-Enrollment

As we move forward in the re-enrollment process for the next school year, we would like to commend the parents that have successfully used the on-line enrollment forms that we instituted this year. At present we have about 130 students already on the list for next year and the numbers grow rapidly every day. We would like to remind parents with more that one child currently attending GAIS, that you must complete an enrollment for each of your children. We apologize if much of the information is repeated, however, in future years the forms will already be populated with this information for you and this process will take almost no time to do.   If you have siblings that will be new to the school, it is important that application forms will be submitted. This should be done as soon as possible as the new sibling enrollment immediately follows the re-enrollment deadline.

News from the Head of School

As we near the end of this first exciting semester we are already deep in the planning phase for the next school year. A change in the organizational structure for August of 2012 will see the addition of the position of Elementary School Principal to the leadership team. A worldwide search for the best candidate has resulted in two finalists visiting the GAIS campus in the next two weeks. Our two aspiring Principals are Martina Moetz and Sally Thorogood who have come to us as the result of the work done by Search Associates, a recruitment firm that works extensively with international schools and evaluated 32 candidates for this position. A little bit about our candidates:

Martina Moetz is currently the Deputy Director of Finance and Strategy at the Luanda International School in Luanda, Angola. She has also been the Director of Admissions at this school and has taught German and Spanish at the PYP and MYP levels in various schools. She is an Austrian citizen and speaks various languages including English and German. She will be at school on January 30th.

Sally Thorogood is the Assistant Elementary Principal at the Munich International School and for a time was acting Principal. She has extensive knowledge and experience in the PYP and has been at MIS for 13 years. She is a UK citizen and speaks German as a second language. She will be at school on February 6th.

Both of our candidates will be interviewed by panels of teachers, parent reps, Board members and students during their day at GAIS. A final decision will be communicated to the community in mid February.

PYP Corner by Maike Silver

This week teachers have worked hard preparing report cards for the students. And every year the teachers struggle give a letter/number grade that is supposed to summarize the students achievement. What makes this process especially difficult is that the assessments throughout the year are not meant to judge the success/ failure, but rather improve the learning for each student. After each assignment the teachers are looking at the areas of success and establish goals for the areas that need improvement. Lesson plans are revised and differentiated tasks are developed for the students. Having worked like this all year, it is really difficult to put the students success now into a normed report. That is why your child's teachers have spend hours formulating comments that can be used to celebrate their success and help you support the student during the second half of the year.

Preschool Corner by Heike Schmalstieg

PS AnimalsDoes it have feathers or scales? Can it swim or fly? Does it live in a zoo, in our home or does it live on a farm? Does the animal provide for us (eggs, milk, meat) or does it live in the wild? There is more to preschool math than counting. Classification skills are building blocks for learning important math concepts. Children classify objects into groups (categories) according to traits they have in common. Preschoolers are learning to recognize colors, shapes, sizes and materials. They are learning about parts and wholes. They can sort one trait at a time but still might have difficulties sorting two traits at the time (e.g.: sort by color and size). The animal unit provides plenty of opportunities to classify and group the animals and the children are currently very busy investigating just that. They are exploring and describing similarities and differences of animals. They are describing an animal in different ways and might be describing characteristics an animal does not possess or what class it does not belong to, or they might be comparing attributes (longer/shorter or bigger/smaller). Questions and natural conversations will extend their thinking. You can do simple math activities with your children at home. To get you started with some ideas, please click here.
