Ready for a Spring Makeover?
|

In continuing with our mission to help you look and feel your very best, Lawrence OB/GYN is pleased to be launching our Aesthetic Division.
You may have heard about SELPHL, often dubbed as "The Vampire Face-Lift." This unique approach in reducing wrinkles uses a person's own blood to increase skin volume and rejuvenation. A small volume of the patient's blood is collected and the platelets and fibrin are concentrated during a simple centrifuge process. The resulting product (liquid, gel or membrane) can be applied to a treatment area of the face or body to stimulate natural, new tissue growth.
The entire process takes about twenty minutes with no post-procedure downtime. The mixture does not contain any animal or synthetic components, so there is virtually no risk of an allergic reaction. By using a patient's own blood, this is an ideal approach for those looking to shy away from synthetic products.
We'll also be offering REFINITY, an Alpha-Hydroxy Acid peel so gentle that all you'll feel are the results. This advanced technology increases the production of collagen and elastin fibers, and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, thus improving skin tone, texture, color and elasticity. You should be able to resume your normal activities immediately after the treatment. This peel can be successfully used on the face, neck, hands and chest.
LIMITED OFFER! Anyone who mentions that they read it here in this newsletter will receive a 15% discount on any service until June 30, 2012! Call today to schedule your appointment!

April is National Infertility Awareness Month
|
|
Greetings!
As you know, we are always advocating the importance of not ignoring your health and overall well-being, which is why we want to share with you information about National Infertility Awareness WeekŪ (NIAW), April 22-28, 2012. This year's theme is "Don't Ignore Infertility" and is a time for all of us to come together, increase public understanding, and change the conversation about infertility.
Did you know...
- One out of every eight couples has difficulty conceiving.
- A normally fertile couple has only about a 25% chance of conceiving each month. 7.3 million people of childbearing age in the U.S. experience infertility every year, and 1 million seek treatment. (RESOLVE, 2012)
- Women and men bear nearly equal responsibility when it comes to infertility. Infertility is a female problem in 40% of cases, a male problem in 40% of cases, and a combined problem of the couple or unexplained in 20% of cases. That is why it is important for both members of the couple to undergo medical evaluation and, as necessary, counseling and treatment. (RESOLVE 2012)
- Infertile women are significantly more depressed than their fertile counterparts with depression and anxiety levels equivalent to women with cancer, heart disease or HIV status. (Domar, Zuttermeister, & Friedman, 1993)
- Recent research on the relationship between psychological distress and IVF success indicates that pre-cycle distress is associated with lower pregnancy rates. (Domar, 2004)
At Lawrence OB/GYN, we know that there is a real need for both physical and emotional support for women and their partners who struggle with infertility, which is why we are helping to spread the word about National Infertility Awareness Week (NIAW), and RESOLVE, the country's largest infertility association. RESOLVE is an invaluable source to help you find information and we hope you will take a moment to learn more about infertility -- you'd be surprised to find out how empowering it can be to learn as much as you can about your own disease. While sharing your experience is a deeply personal decision, it can also be very healing to find others who are facing the same medical and emotional issues as you.
Although it is often a quiet struggle, remember, you are not alone in dealing with this painful experience. People who experience infertility often hesitate to get the help they need because they are fearful or embarrassed. Through National Infertility Awareness Week, we want more people to realize that there is support and information that can help - from RESOLVE, from our team of doctors, and from other patients. Please don't hesitate to seek our advice or let us know if you have any questions or concerns. In keeping with the message of making your health a priority, we have some exciting new ways to help you keep that promise. Spring is the perfect time to ditch those bad eating habits and begin healthy ones. To get you started, we are excited to announce our new Nutrition and Weight Loss program. We have a registered dietician, Bonni, who can work with women to make lifestyle changes that will lead to permanent weight loss and improved health. (You can learn more by emailing Melanie Durnien at mdurnien@lawrenceobgyn.com.) In addition, we will be hosting a Nutrition seminar on Thursday, April 26th, at 6:00 pm in our Lawrenceville office. The topic will be, "Mood and Food: Understanding the Emotional Connection to the Foods We Choose." It is FREE and will be presented by health coach, Eliza Whittaker, the author of "Spring Cleaning," in which she provides great tips on how to re-energize yourself and finally shake off the last of those Winter blahs.
We are also pleased to introduce the launch of our Aesthetic Division, featuring the latest services to help you look and feel younger! We will be performing Selphyl injections as well as Refinity chemical peels. Plus, find out how you can take advantage of a 15% discount on any service until 6/30/12. Lastly, if you're looking for an excuse to pamper yourself, look no further... be sure to join us for the Women's Head to Toe Expo on May 12th in Robbinsville, NJ. You won't want to miss this ultimate Girl's Day Out! With warm regards, The Practitioners and Staff of |

"Spring Cleaning" By Eliza Whittaker People like "stuff". We tend to hold onto it year after year. We save and stock up on things that we don't know what to do with anymore. Maybe we keep things because they hold precious memories of days gone by, or they remind us of our parents, grandparents, past loves or childhood. To part with these precious possessions seems out of the question. There is a saying that goes, "You have to get rid of the old to make way for the new." If you are feeling stuck or stagnant in your life, try spring-cleaning. Throw out some of that stuff, say goodbye to your past and welcome the new energy of your happy, healthy future. Try these three ideas: 1) For good mental and physical health, we actually have two "houses" that need to be spring-cleaned: our physical homes and our physical bodies. Just as we accumulate "stuff" in the form of outgrown clothes, magazines, rusty bicycles, tools and random keepsakes, so do our bodies accumulate old food residues and toxins that need to be cleaned out. 2) To spring clean your body, give it a break from rich and complicated foods by either cleansing or fasting for a short period of time. Cleansing means paring down your food to just simple fruits and vegetables, lots of water and perhaps whole grains. Fasting means limiting most foods and drinking lots of water, fresh vegetable and fruit juices, teas and soups. Without much energy going toward digestion, more energy is available to the rest of your body and mind. Cleansing and fasting can sharpen your concentration, help you gain insight and promote spiritual awareness. It can also bring improved immune function and better digestion. 3) While you're cleaning out your body and home, don't forget to spring-clean your heart. Throw away negative thoughts and habits you've been harboring that no longer serve you. A clean, open heart will allow you to receive all the good that awaits you each and every day. If your heart and mind are cluttered, there is no room for life's gifts and surprises to enter.

Are you on "Allergy Overload"?
|
After staying indoors for much of winter, spring is a welcome relief for most people. While the longer days, green grass and blossoming plants herald in the new season, they also bring the return of pollen. Spring allergies often occur because of pollen. If spending time outside in the spring makes your eyes start to water and your nose run, you may be one of the 40 million Americans suffering from springtime allergies.
Onset of Springtime Allergies
Traditionally, springtime allergies can cause symptoms from March to May. While the amount of pollen spikes in the spring, the amount of pollen in the air can vary from day to day. A pollen count tracks the percentage of pollen in the air and can help people with springtime allergies plan their outdoor activities better.
Common Allergens
The allergen that gets the most credit during springtime is tree pollen, but other allergens can trigger symptoms as well. In warmer climates, mold may be the main culprit causing allergies. Mildew, pet dander and dust mites are also allergens that may contribute to springtime allergies.
Testing for Allergies
Allergy symptoms tend to mirror those of a cold; however, allergy symptoms last longer. People with springtime allergies tend to see the symptoms develop at the same time each year. The best way to determine whether you have a springtime allergy is to visit a doctor for testing. During the test, a doctor or nurse will introduce an allergen to your skin by pricking it. A positive test occurs when the area shows a reaction. Common reactions include the skin turning red, becoming itchy or looking like a bug bite. A doctor may recommend additional testing if the results of the test are inconclusive.
Treatment and Prevention
Spring allergies do not have a cure, but people do have treatment options to help alleviate springtime allergy symptoms. Treatment options are the same for both adults and children. Using an over-the-counter antihistamine may help, but some individuals may need a prescription-strength medication to prevent and alleviate symptoms.
If you suffer from springtime allergies, work with your doctor to determine the best treatment options before the weather starts to warm up. Some allergy medications work to block symptoms before they can begin. Watching the pollen count and staying inside on days when the count is higher than normal may also help you avoid symptoms. In addition to taking medication, you can use a saline nasal rinse to clear allergens from your nasal path. For extreme cases, doctors may be able to help calm the body's reaction to an allergen through a process that exposes the individual to the allergen over a set amount of time.
