Did you know that according to a recent Weight Watchers report, the average American gains around 7-10 pounds between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day?

It's not hard to see how it happens. With all of the tempting gift baskets and colorful chocolates just screaming at you to "just have one," it's no wonder the pounds come on -- and come on strong. Sometimes, it's just easier to give in and have that second piece of pie or third cookie. Despite our promises to "do better tomorrow," it can turn into days, even weeks, of overeating before we take action.

The holidays don't have to add up to weight gain - especially if you follow some simple guidelines to help you stay active during the holiday season.

Greetings!

The holiday season is in full-swing now, which is a time full of joy, cheer and laughter shared with friends and family. Too often, all of the extra time we spend preparing, decorating, planning, shopping, baking and wrapping gift after gift can cause a lot of stress, too.

All of the anticipation in trying to finish our "gifts to buy" list can easily rob us from actually enjoying the holidays at all. Before you know it, you're completely run down, exhausted and frustrated, and then it's suddenly January 2012. You inevitably find yourself asking, "Where did the time go?" The good news is that there are steps you can take NOW so as not to let your stress ruin the season for you (and those around you).

As they say, it's better to give than receive, so what better way to share in the spirit of giving than by helping others.   Lawrence OB/GYN is sponsoring seven children through HomeFront's Christmas Wishes drive, which helps children in our immediate area. In these troubled economic times more and more families face unemployment, foreclosure, homelessness and hunger. The demand for HomeFront's services has seriously increased. Your support is more important than ever. You'll be helping families make their holiday wishes come true by giving such an important gift. Please click here to find out how you can donate.

Holidaystress6 Tips for Coping with Holiday Stress

Woman at peace"It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year," as the song goes... yet, by the look on most people's faces, you wouldn't always think so. While it should be a time to slow down and reflect on our blessings, including health, family, and friends, we usually have to run twice as hard just to get it all done in time.  It's time to do a little "taking"- take back the joy and happiness of the holidays with these stress-busting tips:

1)      Don't use the word "perfect." In reality, a lot of the stress is brought on by using words and messages that bring about unrealistic expectations. Think about this one word you've probably used more than once: "perfect." Have you found yourself saying, "I just can't find the perfect gift," or running from store to store to buy that "perfect" dress for the office party? Start by simply eliminating that word from your vocabulary right now and you'll let go of a lot of anxiety.

2)      Start using the word, "No." Turning down invitations can take a lot out of you, especially if it makes you feel guilty or anxious. Remind yourself - and others - that there are so many hours in the day and we just can't always do it all. Try saying, "I'm sorry. I can't do this right now," or "My schedule is so hectic and I just don't have the time." Be firm -- not defensive or overly apologetic -- and polite. This gives the signal that you are sympathetic, but will not easily change your mind if pressure. If asked for an explanation, remember that you really don't owe anyone one. It's never too late to take a step back and say "yes" to what matters most to you.

3)      Accomplish one thing today. Write out your holiday cards, make your grocery list, buy that on-line gift, whatever it is, stop fretting and just do it. You'll be amazed at how much better you'll feel!

4)      Take your time. Take a moment to think about what you need to do and when you need to do it by. Take your time to eat and don't skip meals just because you're busy. Take your time to drive (better yet - strictly enforce a "no texting/cell phone" policy to help you stay focused). Take time to just slow down and stop and smell the poinsettias!

5)      Take cMake Time for Meontrol instead of becoming out-of-control. Don't let the extra errands derail you from your diet and exercise. Put things on the calendar, plan your workouts just like you would for appointments. Control your mess by staying organized by keeping receipts and important information all in one place. Control your eating by limiting your portions.

6)      Know yourself and know your limitations. Don't take on more than you can handle and avoid taking on too much. Don't agree to new invitations until you've thought about what it will really entail. Does going out to dinner with friends mean spending extra money and getting a sitter for the kids? Will saying yes to that holiday party mean you'll have to buy a new outfit, make a dessert and possibly bring a gift, too? Don't let good habits like getting enough sleep and eating healthy fall to wayside.

Healthy Cheesecake For most of the year, healthy eating is not as hard as it has become now. As soon as the pies, cookies and chocolates rear their delicious but fattening selves, healthy obsession goes out the window replaced with over-indulgence.

However, the holiday season is also a stressful time for many of us, and we need plenty of energy and stamina to cope with it. It is therefore essential that we eat the right type of food with the necessary nutrients to give us energy and reduce stress levels. This is not to say that we shouldn't allow ourselves to indulge a little, but we should eat in moderation and maintain a varied diet.

Have that special get-together to get to, but don't know what to bring? Before you rush out to the bakery, put on that apron and get cooking!
