October 2011

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast Cancer Awareness

Greetings!

"Fall Into Healthy Habits" is one our credos this month, and  what better way to help you begin your journey than by starting with "Breast Cancer Awareness Month."

Since the NationThink Pink for Octoberal Breast Cancer Awareness program began in 1985, mammography rates have more than doubled for women age 50 and older and breast cancer deaths have declined.  In fact, more and more women have been surviving breast cancer, largely because of early detection through mammography and improvements in treatment.

This is exciting progress, but there are still women who do not take advantage of early detection at all, and others who do not get screening mammograms and clinical breast exams at regular intervals.   The key to mammography screening is that it be done routinely - once is not enough.   Early detection as well as educating yourself about breast cancer can be two of the best possible "medicines" toward fighting the disease.

Although October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we want to remind everyone that breast cancer awareness is important all year long.  One in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime.  While this may sound like a sobering statistic, one thing you can do to help reduce those odds is by increasing your nutrition.  Learn more about how your diet can give you an edge toward preventing breast cancerMost importantly, don't delay - make your mammography appointment today!

Since we're talking about developing some new healthy habits, here's one that you might need to re-focus on: over-eating.  The holiday season is fast approaching and it kicks off with Halloween.  Get ready for the constant temptation of candy, candy and more candy.  So, what's a woman to do?  Arm yourself ahead of time with these 10 simple tips to help you fight the fright of Halloween candy!

Capital Health Building (1) We also have some exciting news and events coming up this fall, with the first being about our new, state-of-the-art hospital in Hopewell Township opening on November 6th.  Located on 160 acres at Scotch Road and I-95, the new hospital will include 237 patient beds and a staff of more than 1,500 people.  No detail has been overlooked!

Next month, we hope you will join us the return of "Santa's Workshop"!  Mark your calendars for Friday, November 11th, as we'll have some fantastic gift ideas from vendors such as Mary Kay, Pampered Chef, and more.  Click here for all the details!

Lastly, if you or someone you know has been newly diagnosed with Breast Cancer, know that there is help and you are not alone.  We believe education is empowerment.  The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month Organization provides tons of information and is a great place to start.   With this diagnosis comes lot of questions and decision-making, so please know that our staff is here to help.

With warm regards,

The Practitioners and Staff of Lawrence OB/GYN

Candy cornHave you noticed this time of year you may be eating more than you should?  It's starting to get dark early, the days get cooler-- in other words, it's the fall.  So you may find yourself starting to reach for food more and more, such as the Halloween candy.

Why?  Perhaps it's a way of adjusting to the cooler temps and a long winter ahead, or quite simply because now you can hide under those baggy layers.  Whatever the reason, don't sabotage yourself!  Here are 10 tips to avoid Halloween candy temptations to help keep this fall season a healthy one!

CancerdietHealthy Diet May Reduce Risk of Breast Cancer
Woman grocery shoppingRecent research has shown that the role diet plays in the prevention, treatment and survival of breast cancer may be stronger than you think.  Consuming a healthy diet rich in lean proteins, omega 3-fatty acids, fiber, fruits and vegetables will not only help to manage your weight, but will help keep your body strong to improve your immunity, moods and ability to heal.  In fact, a study from The University of California found that a diet that is rich in dietary fiber appears to reduce estrogen that circulates in the body. For women who are survivors of breast cancer, an estrogen-driven type of cancer, less estrogen may mean less risk of recurrence.

To learn more about how nutrition plays a critical role toward prevention, read the Breast Cancer Survival Diet.

Diet can play a crucial role for someone who is currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer.  If you or someone you know has been struggling with eating during treatment, please take a moment to read What to Cook When Cancer Hits.

MenopauseLife After Menopause: A Message for Women

Venus studyIf you're one of the more than 30 million postmenopausal women experiencing discomfort due to vulvovaginal atrophy (commonly referred to as vaginal dryness) then you know just how uncomfortable the persistent itching, burning, redness, and inflammation can be. And just how much it can affect your everyday life. It's estimated that at least half of all surgically and naturally postmenopausal women suffer from vaginal dryness.

Women who are postmenopausal (or have had both ovaries removed) and are experiencing discomfort due to vaginal dryness are invited to find out if they may qualify for a clinical research study to determine the safety and effectiveness of an investigational medication for the symptoms caused by vaginal dryness.

Each woman will be evaluated to determine her eligibility. Among other criteria, you must be surgically or naturally postmenopausal to qualify. Those who qualify will receive study medication, study-related medical exams, and lab tests at no charge.

To find out more about how you may able to participate in this research study, call Marianne at (609) 803-2378, or e-mail [email protected].
