 Life After Menopause -

A Message for Women

venus study

If you're one of the more than 30 million postmenopausal women experiencing discomfort due to vulvovaginal atrophy

(commonly referred to as vaginal dryness) then you know just how uncomfortable the persistent itching, burning, redness, and inflammation can be. And just how much it can affect your everyday life. It's estimated that at least half of all surgically and naturally postmenopausal women suffer from vaginal dryness.

Women who are postmenopausal (or have had both ovaries removed) and are experiencing discomfort due to vaginal dryness are invited to find out if they may qualify for a clinical research study to determine the safety and effectiveness of an investigational medication for the symptoms caused by vaginal dryness.

Each woman will be evaluated to determine her eligibility. Among other criteria, you must be surgically or naturally postmenopausal to qualify. Those who qualify will receive study medication, study-related medical exams, and lab tests at no charge.

To find out more about how you may able to participate in this research study, call Marianne at (609) 803-2379, or e-mail miavecchia@

September 2011

September is Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month

Group of Women

Greetings!

There's no question that in today's world, we live in a "to-do" oriented world.  Now that summer is officially over, perhaps you've already started your mental checklist of all the projects you'd like to do, such as cleaning out your closet, downloading all of those summer vacation photos, or maybe just making time to pick up the dry cleaning.  Whether or not they are conventional (i.e., go to the gym more often), or emotional (call a friend you've been neglecting), one thing about lists is that their purpose is to provide you clarification regarding the things you feel you want (or even need) to accomplish in order to make your life better.

One thing that needs to be at the top of your to-do list is to schedule your annual gynecologic exam.   This month raises awareness of a very important health issue: gynecologic cancer.   The purpose is to increase awareness and education, support expanded research and training, and provide knowledge and hope for women diagnosed
with cancers specific to them.

Womens cancer logo Learn, Listen, Act is a national public awareness campaign that

encourages women to LEARN how to prevent and detect women's cancers, LISTEN for common symptoms, and ACT quickly to seek care from a gynecologic oncologist if she suspects or has been diagnosed with a gynecologic cancer. Learn, Listen, Act messages are outlined for the three most common gynecologic cancers: cervical cancer, ovarian cancer and uterine cancer.  For more information, please visit the Foundation for Women's Cancer's Web site.

A woman will be diagnosed with gynecologic cancer every seven minutes, according to the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation (GCF).  To evaluate your potential risk for a gynecologic cancer, we recommend knowing your family history, asking questions during your annual gynecologic exam, and getting an annual Pap smear.  Call our office today and make this the most important thing you cross off your "to-do" list!

Race for the Cure

Since we're busy talking about lists, here's another important item for you to add... join Lawrence OB/GYN for "Race for the Cure" on October 2nd!  With cooler temperatures, the weather is perfect to begin your training for a 5k!  Get out and enjoy yourself - just keep moving!  Join our team for this fun and worthwhile cause.   Want to get to know some of your Lawrence OB/GYN teammates?  Come to our Open House on September 21st for some fabulous giveaways and prizes!

Whether this is your first or 10th time running a 5k, completing one can be a daunting challenge.  Not to worry - we've got you covered!  Check out our article loaded with tips on how to start training for a 5k

While you're in training mode, be sure to celebrate National Women's Health and Fitness Day on Wednesday, September 28th.  The goal of this event is to encourage women to take control of their health: to learn the facts they need to make smart health choices, and to make time for regular physical activity.

Use this month to take charge of your "to-do" list and most importantly, take charge of your life... one challenge at a time.

With warm regards,

The Practitioners and Staff of Lawrence OB/GYN

Race for the Cure

Help us ignite the promise!  We are helping to keep the promise that Nancy Brinker made to her sister, Suzy Komen, to end breast cancer forever.

We need your help!  Join the team - walk, run, Sleep-in for the Cure, or make a donation - to support our Race for the Cure efforts.

Be a part of a movement.  Over 20,000 participants and spectators will take steps  to make a difference by celebrating survivors, honoring those we've lost and coming together as a community to fight breast cancer.  Through our participation, we will help women in our local communities receive life-saving breast cancer screening and education programs and fund research to find a cure.  If not us, then who?

The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure will take place at Six Flags Great Adventure on Sunday, October 2nd.  It's more than a run and a walk, the Race is a day to celebrate breast cancer survivors, remember those we lost and come together as a community in the fight against breast cancer.  REGISTER NOW for the largest 5k in New Jersey. You can make a difference!

Want to "wear" your support?  Now you can look fashionable and help out a worthy cause!  Buy one of these cool T-shirts for only $20, and you'll be helping us in the fight against Breast Cancer.  We have two designs to choose from - "Fight Like a Girl" and "Save Second Base."  Last year, we sold out, so don't wait!  Call or stop in one of our offices today!

fivetipsforfivek5 Tips for Your First 5k!
Are you ready to conquer the 5K?  Running a 5K is an excellent goal for new runners. You'll get lots of motivation as well as enjoyment from participating in a race.  It's a perfect distance for first-timers (3.1 miles). Even if you're a couch potato, you can be ready for a 5K in a couple of weeks.

If you start now, you'll be ready to join us for Race for the Cure on Sunday, October 2nd, at Six Flags Great Adventure.  To help get you on your way, check out these great tips to help you cross that finish line.

1.  Invest in some good running shoes and attire.
Go to a specialty running store - one that's actually going to look at your feet and suggest a shoe based on your foot type.  Without the right shoe, all the training in the world won't help you avoid an injury.  Stay away from 100% cotton shirts and socks - once they get wet, they stay wet.  Look for apparel that pulls moisture away from the body.

Women jogging2.  Keep track of your workouts.
Log down each workout, how far you went and your time.  This will only help strengthen your commitment and be able to see your progress.  Compete against yourself!  Here's a great FREE app for iphones to help you chart your runs: iMapMyWalk.  (There's also one called iMapMyRuns, too.)  This ingenious app will track you as you walk, show your route, how many calories you burned and your time.  It's the perfect coach!

3.  Find a specific training program for your fitness level.

If you want to run the 5k, you'll need a specific training regimen to get there. Here are some links to help you form a start-up plan:

Run Your First 5k;

Race Day Tips for Running Your First Race;

How to Start Running;

3 Weeks to a 30-Minute Running Habit;

5 Weeks to a 5k.

4. Get started and start slow.
Once you get out there to conquer the pavement or the trail, make sure you take it easy. Don't be a victim of the "terrible too's" -- too much, too soon. Especially during those first two weeks. Let your body and your muscles adjust to the new exercise. Stretch often.

5. Fuel Your Running.

When you start running, your appetite will probably increase. You'll want to make sure you're fueling your runs with plenty of good protein and complex carbs. Try centering each of your meals around 60% protein, 30% carbs and 10% fats.

Running is an excellent sport. You can run on trails, in the park, or just around the neighborhood. And in just one month, you could be competing in your first 5k with us!

You'll find the running community to be very encouraging with lots of camraderie. So go ahead and get signed up for your first 5k and put on those running shoes!
